Trump tariffs are a tax on the American citizens
WRONG. I've already explained how they aren't.
and you admit that in your last sentences.
LIE.
When you look sector by sector you will the metrics for the expected margins with or without tariffs being applied and that is what successful companies operating in the sectors will target to get based on the sale of their product to American's.
So if the sector metrics say companies in Sector Y need to earn X and the cost of manufacture in CHina goes up, the companies raise the prices to cover that. If shipping costs across the sector go up, the companies raise prices to cover that. Etc, etc, etc, to ANY AND ALL COSTS that would impact the target margins.
Tariffs are no different. COmpanies in a segment do not just suddenly say 'we will accept 15% or more reduction in our margins' when they have the power to pass it on to the customers who have no choice when the impact is sector wide, such as all shipping costs going up, or all manufacturing costs in CHina going up, or all tariffs applied equally do.
You are such a moron, and you still have absolutely NO clue what tariffs actually are or how they are actually applied. First off, it's not necessarily true that an importing company takes the hit for the entirety of the tariff (which you claim that they then pass onto the consumer), but for simplicity's sake, let's just assume that they do take the hit for the entirety of the tariff and let's also assume that they ARE the retailer (because that's not necessarily true either).
An importing company paying a 15% tariff to the US Government does NOT reduce a company's profits by 15%. TARIFFS ARE NOT APPLIED TO RETAIL PRICES. Payment of such tariffs would actually only reduce a company's profits by a sliver of said 15%. Here's why:
0% TARIFF: Importing company imports 100 widgets at $5 per widget = $500.00 cost of importing widgets
15% TARIFF: Importing company imports 100 widgets at $5.75 per widget = $575.00 cost of importing widgets
Importing company RETAILS and sells those 100 widgets [This particular price point maximizes profit] at $25 per widget = $2,500.00 profit
Importing company RETAILS and sells only 97 of those 100 widgets [lost some customers due to higher prices] at $25.75 per widget (to "cover tariff cost") = $2,497.75 profit
0% TARIFF = $2,000 profit less import cost.
15% TARIFF = $1,925 profit less import cost.
15% TARIFF (w/ raising retail price to "cover tariff cost") = $1,922.75 profit less import cost.
This company will thus eat the tariff in order to maximize its profit ($1,925 instead of $1,922.75)
I don't believe you.
