Most atheists, and I include myself in this, don't give a damn for religion or the adherents of religion. Religion does not impinge on their lives at all. However, when injustices are promoted in the name of religion, as human beings, atheists often express their opinions.
Yes, but where is the evidence someone was trying to promote an injustice with their religion, which prompted you to express your opinion here?
One cannot fear things that do not exist (yes, I know some children are scared of monsters and things).
My point exactly. You must believe God exists to fear him so much.
Now when parents insist that their children believe in one particular untruth then we should all become concerned.
No we shouldn't, it's not any of your fucking business. You're not the purveyor of truth, no one died and made you supreme guardian of the truth. You claim to believe something different, and that is your right, but it's an injustice promoted in the name of your NON-religion, to try and force me to live by what you believe. It's amazing, you deride religious people for something you have no evidence for, while doing the very thing you claim they are doing.
(before I go any further I need to say that my wife follows a faith based religion and I allowed her to bring our two children up in that church. Daughter has stuck to her faith, son has given it up.)
The benefits that I saw of a religious education were that where we lived when we were first married was not known for its outstanding education. The local Catholic school was consistently obtaining better results and believed in a little discipline.
I just can't imagine an Atheist finding a Catholic school which is not 'promoting injustices in the name of religion', are these Atheistic Catholics? Shouldn't someone step in and prevent you from teaching your children untruths? It's what you said a moment ago, does this not apply to you?
Most atheists do not resort to ridicule unless they contribute to a forum such as this which appears to have some of the most narrow minded religious zealots as contributors.
Again, I am not seeing where you were prompted by any sort of zealot, to post this thread. I see the evidence of you talking down to those who have religious beliefs, calling what they believe "untruths" and proclaiming your 'right' to tell them how to raise their kids... which, doesn't apparently apply to you or your own kids.
The insults, as can be readily seen from this thread, tend to come from the theist side.
No, actually, by the very existence of this thread, you are contradicted. I've not insulted anyone, I have only stated facts and opinions.
The temptation to hurl insults when faced with people who say they believe the earth is flat or that it is only 6000 years old or that some unknown and unproven figment of imagination created everything we see about us, is often too great.
I see no thread on the board promoting a 6,000 year old Earth, and no 'religious' poster I know of, has ever tried to present that argument at JPP. And you are free to believe that belief in God is "an unproven figment of imagination" but you aren't free to tell me that's what I must think as well.
You have said you are 'spiritual' rather than a believer in a god. That's fine with me and most people I guess. I will engage you but I will not ridicule you unless you ridicule me and others. Your sig line tends to ridicule.
My sig line is a direct quote from another poster. The thread post is even linked, so people can go read it for themselves. It's not ridicule to quote someone, is it? I'm glad that you approve my right to my spiritual beliefs, but I don't need or require your approval.
I will however ridicule you for your politics and the silliness of your politicians. After all we have to have a smile every now and then. That's just human.
Yes, Atheists are generally miserable people who need to find things to smile about. Usually taking a big steamy dump on religion for no reason at all, is plenty enough to bring a smile to their face. Lashing out at a God they blame for their lot in life, or credit for the injustices done to them, is very gratifying indeed. I understand completely.
