I've done a bit of research on Merkel, though, and she seems pretty legit as far as conservatism is concerned. I think she'll do a lot of good for Germany. Whether you want to admit it or not, the European social welfare state is on the decline because Europeans are rejecting it. The UK is next. Hell, Gordon Brown's approval rating makes George W. Bush look like a celebrity.

Also, this is kind of cherry picking. This comes on the heels of the first left-wing government in Icelands history, a huge left-wing victory in Spain, and the left-wing parties being returned to government in Norway.

The CDU has been returned to government with practically no gains. The FDP won 3 more percentage points. This was not a landslide by any means.

Or, The Southern Man is comparing Europe based on its own standards. The Socialists in Germany lost about 1/2 of their seats.

The Southern Man has been to Greece and Italy, and his beautify bride of 23 years is planning a two week river cruise in Germany, possibly next summer.

Once again the assumptions of a closed-minded lefty fail miserably. :)

The SDP lost about 1/3 of their seats. The center-left Greens and the neo-communist Left picked up most of the losses, with the rest going to the FDP. The CDU gained nothing.

It's clearly erroneous to state that the Socialists lost ground, so that means that the left is dying, when the Socialists lost ground to environmentalists, communists, and liberals.
