Florida book bans - the first step before burning

I'd be okay with a ban on Mein Kampf or The Turner Diaries in a fourth grade classroom.

But the intentional vagueness of this law, and the fact MAGA's were too lazy and devious to provide a ban list or specific guidance, is obviously intended to cast as wide a net as possible on all American and European literature.

Age-appropriate should be a given, but apparently needs to be spelled out for the ignorant MAGAts seeking to dumb-down schools.

I'm suspicious of the "media specialists" who are being trained by the government to approve/disapprove of books and other learning materials. What does *that* remind you of?
Every authoritarian society, be it Left or Right, that has plagued mankind.

A couple of decades ago evangelical MAGAs tried to get Harry Potter banned from schools because witches!

I remember that. We got our first HP book when my late husband took the post-Christmas trash out to the dumpster and found a brand new hardcover copy sitting in there on top of stuff, still with a bit of wrapping paper taped to it. We all took turns reading it, loved it, and the rest was history. It was the book who got my youngest, who had reading/language disabilities, to learn to love reading for its own sake. She is now a (real) special ed teacher with a masters degree.

Soviet censors.

Under MAGA law, I can see Uncle Tom's Cabin or the writings of Frederick Douglass being banned.

One of the best things about this FL push to ban learning materials is access to the Internet will keep it from being a complete fascist move. Think about when YOU were a teenager. If you had discovered that you were not allowed access to a particular book, and that everyone was laughing at your state for banning it, wouldn't you be even more curious and want to check it out?

I sense a lesson in the law of unintended consequences coming right up. lol

Or just about anything written by a Black author about their struggles with discrimination/racism. Ditto for Native American authors like Winona LaDuke. Or about residential boarding schools. Eventually even the Holocaust will be forbidden to speak of. "First they came for the Communists..."

Exactly. All intelligent teenagers would be curious about things being denied to them.

I read all the books in the Harry Potter series, and I'm a better person for it!

If it helps tender fragile MAGAs to feel better, I think it is appropriate for schoolchildren to learn that slavery was widely practiced globally in the Middle East, in Europe, in Latin America, in Africa, and in some indigenous American cultures.

I'm almost positive I was aware slavery was a global practice as early as fifth grade

It's even in the Bible.

That's a lot of cleaning, TOP!

What's your favorite technique for removing gum from under desks?

You might not have been here yet when The Great TOP Title Outrage took place. If you don't put a title under your user name, with time and enough posts, it will automatically change to "High (or Insane) Level of Addiction." (RB60's says that; see screenshot.)

Much to the twat's horror, she logged in one morning and hers had changed to "High Level of Addiction." She was OUTRAGED and accused one particular mod of changing it on purpose to humiliate her. No amount of posts from others saying that it just happens would change her mind. Nope, it was that one evil mod who's friends with Evil Owl. It was totally hilarious. Apparently someone finally took pity on the dumb bimbo and PMd her how to change it herself. So now it's a less-honest title. A LOT less honest.

It didn't take long for me to realize TOP had a few too many kinks in her hose. Nothing wacky or hateful that she posts surprises me.

Florida is not banning any books. They are simply not including them in school libraries. They have all the authority they need to do that.
If you want to read books that push sexual perversions, you still can. You just can't get one from the school library.

It is telling that you are obsessed with sexual perversions.
