"Arabic numerals" actually originated in India around the 6th century CE and were known as "Hindu numerals" before being adopted and spread by the Islamic world through Arabic-speaking regions, hence the common misnomer "Arabic numerals.".

I read that there was a great library and center of learning in Baghdad that rivaled the ancient Library of Alexandria, and after the Mongols sacked the city centuries of learning and scholarship maintained in the Baghdad library were completely destroyed by fires and looting, and lost to the ages.

History owes a debt to three Indian mathematicians of 1500 years ago who developed Algebra to give meaning to the meaningless. Bhaskara, who originated the radical signs. Brahmagupta, who created the symbols. Aryabhata, who worked out the first equations.
Algebra was invented by Greeks, Babylonians, Indians, and Chinese.

Long Story, short: Algebra and Algorithm, which his study reference claims came from the Indian or Hindu/Vedic mathematics study. Later it was introduced to the Greeks, Babylonians, and Chinese. Al-Khwarizmi who was the father of algebra simplified and translated the works of the Indians.
Many people believe that he invented algebra, but technically he didn’t, he just introduced newer methods of calculating algebra which was based on a synthesis of Indian and Greek knowledge that have been translated, and yet he coined the term ‘al-jabr’ which became Algebra when translated into Latin. It’s not just Algebra but today’s trigonometry was based on Indian and Greek trigonometry, also translated for the Islamic Golden Age.
Indian Mathematics is predominantly algorithmic. In fact, the very word “Algorithm” is derived from the name of Al Khwarizmi (c. 9th Century) whose works played a crucial role in the transmission of Indian algorithmic procedures to the Islamic and later to the Western world. He can rightly be called the father of Algebra and Algorithms in his region because he introduced the simplified versions of the same to the West, but to the world, it was the Indians first and then rightly the Greeks and other regions’ mathematicians.
Al-Khwarizmi Cannot be Considered the Sole Father of Algebra or Algorithms. Here’s why:

A Muslim? Who? Well, several pro-Islamist websites claim he was Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Musa, described by them as the father of algebra. But there’s a slight problem: Abu Ja’far was a newcomer. He lived from 780 to 850 AD. The origins of algebra precede his birth by 2,500 years — in ancient Babylonia, Egypt and Athens.
The earliest known origins are the Rhind mathematical papyrus, written by the scribe Ahmes (or Ahmose) in Egypt around 1650 BC. Other authorities credit the Athenian Diophantus as the father of algebra, based on his series of books, “Arithmetica,” whose texts deal with solving algebraic equations. Diophantus lived and wrote 900 years before the founding of Islam in 610 AD — and 1,100 years before Abu Ja’far.
Indeed, the English word “algebra” comes from the Arabic word al-jabru. But al-jabru is not Arabic for invention or discovery — it means restoration or reunion. This clearly indicates acknowledgment of previous science, invention and use of algebra by others — not Muslims.
