Genius Elon Musk calls for the ACLU to be defunded (they don't receive Federal money). LOL

The irony I find with the ACLU is it's claim of non-partisanship. Now plenty of non-profit organizations lean one way or the other but the ACLU is well past the leaning stage.

Until a few weeks ago I had not heard their name mentioned in years. The ACLU name used to carry weight. Now it's just another progressive group.

The irony of Musk's statement is it will probably help increase the ACLU's fundraising.
We're talking about the organization that has a history of defending civil rights for all, correct? Its historical landmark was the defense of Neo-Nazi's to march in Skokie, IL in 19877 right up to defending the NRA in NY this year.

So, your inference that the ACLU is " just another progressive group" is just plain wrong. Period.

The reason I said the ACLU’s name used to carry weight was because of its history. It was a defender of free speech, even for the most odious groups.

There was a thread on here about the ACLU a couple of weeks ago and there was a long article posted from The NY Times about how the group’s priorities have changed and yes, it does have the same mission and principles that it used to.

Yeah, well since the NY Times objectivity went out the window with Judith Miller and the Iraq War their lasted take on any subject has to be greatly scrutinized.

I just gave ONE example from this year regarding the ACLU and the NRA. That alone pulls the rug out from under the Time's article. Here's what they say:

Allegations that the ACLU no longer defends the speech rights of those with whom we disagree are unfounded. Since our inception in 1920, we have defended the speech rights of neo-Nazis, white supremacists, religious fundamentalists, anti-LGBTQ individuals, and more. In the past decade, we have supported the constitutional rights of the NRA, the Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity Foundation, antisemitic protesters, conservative and anti-gay student groups, Trump supporters, and Trump himself, to name but a few. We have filed multiple Supreme Court briefs with the Cato Institute, the American Conservative Union, and the Institute for Justice. www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/defending-speech-we-hate

“We don’t support the NRA’s mission or its viewpoints on gun rights, and we don’t agree with their goals, strategies, or tactics,” the ACLU in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter. “But we both know that government officials can’t punish organizations because they disapprove of their views.”

So in reality, the ACLU really doesn't support the goals or values of gun owners and has never supported the NRA, just the NRA's 1st Amendment right to speak.

From their website...
"The ACLU is nonprofit and nonpartisan. We do not receive any government funding. Member dues as well as contributions and grants from private foundations and individuals pay for the work we do."

Wait until he finds out about the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Yep Elon is an idiot savant
Did Elon say otherwise?

Here is a list of the various sources of income to the ACLU in the year 2020.

The $140 M funding includes $10 M in government grants.

The percentage amount of the ACLU funding varies from year to year, with some years government funding is 30%+, in other years, it is less than 10%.

But the ACLU always gets some of its funding from government grants.

this was always established that it was 7% of their funding. Like I previously said, losing that will be felt, but it won't be crucial. Observe from your source:

Individual Donors: $64.6 million (46% of total contributions and grants)
Foundation Grants: $34.4 million (25% of total contributions and grants)
Corporate Donations: $14.1 million (10% of total contributions and grants)
Government Grants: $10.3 million (7% of total contributions and grants)
Other Sources: $16.9 million (12% of total contributions and grants)

So as usual, the MAGA mooks exaggerate and mislead in their rhetoric.

translation: another MAGA troll got his ass handed to him with easily obtained FACTS, and he doesn't have the cojones to concede a point. Typical.

...but you are. You are often wrong. Have the balls to admit it.
