Give suspects in rape cases anonymity to prevent the innocent becoming 'stigmatised',

because we have the presumption of innocence in this country. To play devils advocate, maybe the guy was framed, maybe the police are wrong, maybe the DNA wasn't left at the scene a certain time...who knows. I am not saying that's the way it is but there are valid logical reasons to oppose a mob mentality before a trial has even taken place.

I'm certainly not advocating mob mentality. And where I live, women accused of sex crimes are named in the press just like men. And women have to pay the price for false accusations just like men. So this woman should be presumed innocent yet here she is, all over the local news.

MUNHALL (KDKA) — A Steel Valley high school teacher is accused of sexting her male students.

Many of the messages 29-year-old Jennifer Smith is accused of sending to students are just too graphic to outline.
Police say she asked the five male students to erase the photos and the messages.
The evidence and accusations are substantial, but her attorney, David S. Shrager, shed no light on her side of the story.

And here is an article naming and picturing a number of female offenders. http://mobile.wnd.com/2012/11/39783/

Sorry but from my perspective women get every bit as much publicity as men for sexual crimes.

Have fun. He posts about rape as much as he can while thinking about me. He's all yours, I couldn't care less what rape stories he posts. He loves rape, that's all I need to know. Creepy! I'm not touching it.

I don't get it. If a woman is raped, chances are she was face to face with the attacker. Plus he leaves DNA on the scene. So if visual identification and DNA match confirm identity, why should the person be anonymous? Of course this also applies to cases where the woman is the perp. Such as Ashley Campbell.

Ashley Campbell arrested for sexual abuse of student

Ashley Jean Campbell, 27, of Cochranville, Pennsylvania was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual abuse of a minor and two counts of committing a fourth-degree sex offense. Campbell was a teacher at Montrose Christian School in Rockville.

DNA evidence only confirms that sex has occurred, I don't see how it can differentiate between consensual or non-consensual sex. If there are no signs of a struggle then the outcome really boils down to who appears more plausible to a jury.

meanwhile you jail people for what they say on twitter and watch every street corner with cctv's.

Oh come on, what does that have to do with the price of fish? Anyway when it comes to surveillance which country has the Patriot Act and is talking about using drones domestically? Regarding Twitter, that was a law passed by Tony B Liar which was intended for a totally different purpose which has been misused.

Well I think that is wrong, there should be anonymity for both.

Re: Give suspects in rape cases anonymity to prevent the innocent becoming 'stig

Did you see my inclusion of "(eventually)"?

Yeah and it is still not really true. Murder accusations can ruin someone and their have been plenty of people accused of rape that were not.

There is no reason to single out rape. If the injustice of false accusations is such a concern then the anonymity should apply to all suspects. I don't necessarily think it is a good idea, especially if charges are brought.

Why would you single out rape? If it is worthwhile then why not all crimes? The perp walk is intended as punishment here and for all sorts of crimes.

The perp walk can be eliminated in a second....publicly naming a person in the media is quite different.

Thats the point....IF a women is raped....IF she was face to face with the scumbag...IF he leaves dna......

and your statement about Ashley is a case in point....suppose she isn't guilty at all....her life will be affected forever.........for nothing.

Don't flatter yourself.....we all know you've done more than touch it.

Are you asserting that the percentages of those who were able to reclaim their lives and continue on, are the same between those accused of murder when compared to those accused of rape or child molestation?

I guess the year that the Lacrosse players had to endure, after being falsely being accused of rape, was just a "mild inconvenience"; as some have said. :palm:

Re: Give suspects in rape cases anonymity to prevent the innocent becoming 'sti

There really would not be anyway to confirm that. No i am saying an accusation of murder can have the same damaging effects. It really depends on press coverage. I am sure there are many people that are accused of rape but without press coverage there is no lasting damage to their reputation.

If this premise is sound then I see no reason why it should only apply to those accused of rape. A false accusation of any crime can harm someone.

Yeah....remember the poor, powerful married exec. that had a young women that works for him and give him blow jobs in his office? ....the harm it did
to him and his wife was just.....just....just........overlooked as I recall.....and it was true, not just an accusation.

You are always topical.

Yeah, we were talking about accusations of a crime.

The responses in this thread are real eye openers, I am reporting what the chairwoman of the Bar Council of England and Wales has said. It has been all over the media in the UK, I do not recall any of the histrionics and hysteria that you get here about it.
