God or Trump?

How Trump liberated the Religious Right from religion

"God made Trump.” So Trump’s platform, Truth Social, now declares. And He made him for a divinely appointed mission. This is actually the more discreet form of the new blasphemy.

Some of the former president’s base now treat him like the son of God. It is a mistake to see Trump only as a political leader. In 2024, he is also a cult for Evangelicals who no longer want to be Christians or churchgoers constrained by the Bible or a community of fellow believers. He has liberated them from the Bible, or from biblical morality, which is evidently too great a burden. Their new religion consists of participating in ritual acts where Trump tramples on that old morality in some new and shocking way, intoxicating his supporters with the thought that they, too, are now free to trample on these values.

In a January 11 front-page story published just before the Iowa caucus, the New York Times described these Evangelicals who no longer go to church and instead religiously follow Trump, who never goes to church. Given that Trump’s appeal is all about resentment, something like this was bound to happen. Like elite education, biblical morality was just one more thing about which Trump’s followers could be made to feel bad or looked down upon. So many of them are enraged at being judged, even by the Sermon on the Mount. I was a stranger and you welcomed me? That sounds like Biden. Even if such biblical morality is by now much weaker than it once was, it is still there, as an irritant. Trump relieves his followers of this sense of shame.

By elevating a leader who violates every commandment, MAGA has become a new religion—and like any other new religion, it has created a burst of energy. The old Evangelical Christianity was not quite the right vehicle for Trump. Its replacement is better because it excises the moral element altogether.

But this article has a good point, that Trump has liberated them from the morality of the Sermon on the Mount, or of even trying to emulate the example of Jesus.
No Christian practices the teaching of Jesus. I have never heard of anyone putting turning the other cheek into practice.

^^^^Quoted for truth!

There are many on here who tout the teachings of Jesus as if they value his teachings. But they show that they couldn't actually care less about the teachings. There is a poster on here who likes to talk a lot about the historicity of Jesus and will attack anyone who so much as mildly questions it.

There are posters on here who mouth the teachings of Jesus as a virtue but don't live by them. A couple posters have an undying hatred of someone which they cannot let go, even though Jesus explicitly said to love thy enemy and when stricken on the cheek, turn the other cheek.

The love of hatred is a hard love to give up. That's why Christ's teachings are often SO HARD. Even people that fancy themselves to be good people are prone to it.

One person.
Not really, his whole civil rights movement resisted the urge to retaliate against abusive racists.

Quakers and Mennonites. They are universally known for being pacifists, and the British and American government typically excuse them from the military draft, since they refuse to kill other people.

They are about as much "Christians" as I am Angelina Jolie. There is literally nothing about their #MalignantMessiah that is in keeping with the teachings of Christ. They just use the Xtian self-description as a club to beat others over the head -- especially non-Trumpanzees, people of color, LGBTQ ppl, etc. We see it here every single day.

Good point.

Most of the so-called Christians on message boards don't go to church, don't participate in religious community, and think that the moral vision of the sermon on the mount is for wimps.

I think it's a good insight that the cult Trump has inspired freed these rightwing nationalists from feeling any need to try to emulate the example of Jesus.

All you have to do is show up here on any Sunday morning and watch the venomous froth spew from the ones who most loudly bleat about their great faith and/or who quote Bible passages.

OOOHHHH LOOK

Cypress is having another meltdown of hate for Orange Man Bad.

Doesn't seem like Stalinists are all that certain of retaining power, I'm just saying.

It's always fun to watch Atheist Marxists sit in judgment of Christians for not practicing their religion the way the atheists demand they do.

You're kind of like a 6 year old demanding a Major League pitcher throw the ball they way they think they should.

But a whole lot more hypocritical.
