two points: 1. one does not need to be a mind reader to tell that the closest you've ever come to Beirut was, maybe, the Jersey shore.... and
2. I didn't "hear it from a friend", I was a US military officer working for the UN in their PLO liaison office in Beirut, and, part of my national collateral job description was to routinely brief the US Naval Attache ( a full bird Marine Colonel) on all sensitive intelligence information that I became privy to while wearing the UN hat... I did so... we became close associates AND close friends. I was there when he wired his request for additional security in the wake of the the fall '81 Israeli bombing of PLO sites in West Beirut. I never said that Reagan denied the request. I would seriously doubt if he ever even heard of it.... but I know the request was sent... and I know it was denied. Was that Shultz's fault? Probably not. Was the similar failure to better defend Benghazi Clinton's fault? Probably not. I guess George Shultz is lucky he never ran for the GOP nomination for president, eh?
