Homicides (the rate per 100,000) have been steadily decreasing since the early 90s (with an ever so slight uptick the last few years). Suicides (the rate per 100,000) have been steadily increasing since the turn of the century.

Why are less homicides being committed but more suicides being committed?

Those 40,000 gun deaths have multiple causes, each of which requires its own solution. But to you, each of those deaths is identical to every other one of those deaths.
