Ferdinand Magellan never made it to space. The Magellan probe to Venus did though. That was not science. It was simply a trip to Venus. It used the laws of thermodynamics, various theories of molecular bonding (part of chemistry), Kepler's laws, Newton's Law of gravitational attraction, and Newton's law of motion to travel there. Those laws are science, not the trip itself.

Other than Kepler's laws, you use the same laws when you drive your car or ride a bus.

Most of the bullshit emanates from NASA GISS, run by Gavin Schmidt in New York. He has little to do with NASA proper and is almost wholly responsible for all the wildly exaggerated claims that come from CMIP5 climate models. It was GISS that caused 49 ex-NASA employees, including astronauts, to call on the agency to stop making "unproven and unsubstantiated remarks" regarding global climate change — specifically that human activities are driving global warming.
