I thought you didn't need Passports in Europe? You know, European Union thing.

You don't need passports once in the Schengen Area to move from one country to another, by road or rail. Air flights are different and subject to greater security checks hence you will need a passport regardless. The UK, being outside Schengen, requires a passport to be shown when travelling to and leaving the EU.
