I can see the agonized rants now: "Obama bans cell phones"....

We can't fix all the shitty drivers. But we can do something to try and keep at least some of the irresponsible idiots from killing other people.
I can think of one way that would eliminate most of the shitty drivers in this country. Revoke the States of michigan and Washington right to issue drivers licenses (or ban selling twinkies in those States. Which would be about the same thing since that's obviously where they get their drivers licenses in those States.)

fortunately the law permits us to ignore the opinions of people from Ohio under the "convicted felons" exemption........

Washington has successfully banned cell phone driving, first by Initiative in 2008 (as a secondary traffic offense), and then by Congress as a primary offense in the summer of 2010. And, its true, our drivers (at least in Pugetopolis) suck monkey balls. Back in 2000, they made not having a trash bag in your car a secondary offense warranting a fine (no one was really sure why, and it became a "fuck you" offense to offenders who were rude to cops), but that one finally went out of style.

I drive and talk more than when it was legal, needless to say (technically, I didn't own a mobile until about six months before the first law took effect). Of course, I am still permitted to eat, drink, etc., while driving, as a sandwich and a pop are not cell phones.

Amazing. Your state banned cell phone use while driving years ago yet your State still produces the nations worst drivers (next to michigan). How did you manage that? ;)

Drive Thrus at Starbucks, Tully's, and Cutters Point.

Washington is also the state which invented the "you go; no, you go" game at 4-Way Stops. Go figure.

I imagine that when phones are integrated into everybody's stereos this argument will likely go away.

I wonder if people argued against stereos in cars until people got used to changing channels with those little buttons.

what a huge waste of time and in general it's a worthless law. there are numerous states right now that ban texting and driving, yet every fricking day i'm on the highway I can see at least a dozen people with their noses buried in their cell phones texting away while driving. this law will stop nothing.

legion finds 3 links and that somehow proves his point? LOL.

not a single 'rightie' on this board did what he claimed. further, the vast majority of the right does not think that way.

troll on troll

It's not a law. Read the OP.

But you stance is interesting. So laws that you see being broken should be repealed?

Another question...when you're on the highway, are you licensed, registered and insured, as the laws of Texas require?

I understand that it's now a law, it's a recommendation by a federal agency. It's a good possibility that it will be law in all 50 states at some point because congress, in it's finite level of intelligence, will simply withhold federal highway funding to any state that doesn't.

no, but victimless laws should be. talking on a cell phone while driving should not be made illegal, especially when you know damn well that there will be exemptions for law enforcement or government agents in the performance of their duties, which will of course become an extended courtesy to those same people NOT performing an official duty. So in short we'll end up with a set of laws for us and a set of laws for them.

why do you wish to know?

Right, it is a recommendation to make all states have a law against something. It is a waste of time law. They are a day late and a dollar short, states are already addressing this without their recommendation.

Please cite the language in the recommendation that would "make all states have a law".

The recommendation is that all states adopt this law. Are you always deliberately obtuse or are you giving it special attention today?

It is not "now a law", and please cite the source of your information regarding future Congressional action to potentially deny funding to states that allow distracted driving. Are you psychic?

no, but victimless laws should be.

If a texting/cellphone using distracted driver causes a crash that destroys property and/or maims or kills others, is there no "victim"?

I don't know "damn well" there will be exemptions for anyone, and if you do, cite your source. In fact, federal employees are already prohibited from using cell phones while driving.
