what would you call them? I don't think it takes much courage to take your own life. Yes they had to execute a plan to murder the number of people they did but they did it because they believe they will have 71 virgins waiting for them in heaven? They're still weak to me.

It shows the extent of the commitment these people have made to what they see as their cause, and the lengths to which they're willing to go to achieve what they're told their goals are. That it is fanatacism, even lunacy, doesn't diminish that and we should be aware of that.
 
Calling them cowards is a line taken straight from the 2004 election Karl Rove playbook. It's just a "we hate them more" bullshit thing without any reality in it.

Should we start puting posters of the 19 dudes on our kids bedroom walls and be like "these are real men, guy's who have balls, that we should try and emulate?"

Those guys are pieces of shit. I'm not sure what "we hate them more" has to do with anything.

That depends on how you define courage. It also depends on how many gross generalizations about what they really believed you're willing to accept.

The fear of death is one of the few -- about half dozen, I believe -- truly instinctive responses we have. You can't just wish that fear away: it happens to all of us, to varying degrees. These are people who were able to face down that fear for some larger cause. You may think their cause was really sucky -- I'd even vote for "evil" in some cases -- but that doesn't change the courage needed to really do it.

Honestly, there's little real difference between the 9/11 hijackers or Palestinian suicide bombers, on the one hand, and a Sgt. York or William Caddy, on the other. What differences there are lie in the causes they were each willing to die for . . . and, since anyone can be mislead, the rectitude of those causes don't affect their bravery at all.

We can honor German soldiers of the first and second world wars, now. It took a while but we're there. This is no different.
 
All Semantics aside.........

I don't give a damn if they were considered brave or not...they were cold blooded killers and all their ilk must be whiped from the face of the planet!

Impractical and inhumane. There's no way that all of their "ilk" can be "wiped from the face of the planet" without also killing hundreds of thousands or millions of innocents. Stop trying to "wipe them out" and start trying to be realistic. We'll all sleep better.

The point is that there's no good reason to cast them as "cowards" unless you're actively fomenting war. Rarely a good thing, that.

If we're going to wipe anyone out, I vote for evangelical Christians. They're much more of a real threat to my freedom and way of life. Face it: they're evil little fuckers. The world would be far better off without them.

There'd be a lot fewer trailer parks too.

No, it's that y'all can't seem to see anything between the extremes of doing nothing and "wiping them out". I think it's a problem with the vision thing. Probably need an ophthalmologist.

There are other options. Always have been and probably always will be.
