It's not gun control. Banning handguns, rifles, and shotguns is gun control. Handguns are useful for defending your home, sometimes for discreet hunting. I prefer shotguns for that, but whatever.

But assault rifles are weapons of war and destruction, plain and simple. A few will wind up in the street, sure, but the country won't be saturated with them to the point that little depressed psychopathic boys can get a hold of them.

Marksmanship. I was in the Army and learned to shoot the M16A1 and A2. Until my divorce I had an AR15 and took it out regularly to shoot targets because I could hit more targets over longer distances over open sites than with any weapon I have ever fired in my life. There are literally tens of thousands of people who do this very same thing EVERY WEEKEND. Because ONE FUCKHEAD crazy guy kills people and you want to rip peoples property from them cause that will stop the madness in your mind. It never will. More people per capita were murdered in Mexico every year by guns than here in the US until 2002.

Get a long distance rifle. You don't need something with automatic firing for the purpose of markmanship. 10 dead people aren't worth 1000 people practicing markmanship.
 
The people have to have one last check on a government that has gone too far. If you disarm the populace and a dictatorship arises you have very little recourse. An armed citizenry is the final barrier.

The Mujahdeen defeated an enemy armed far better than they were. You can defeat a better armed enemy with the rifle. The handgun and shotgun are the weapons of self defense. The rifle is the weapon of freedom. Give me enough men armed with rifles and through guerilla tactics i will slowly but surely take their anti tank weapons from them, then I will take their tube artillery and their tanks and eventually I will defeat them.

You are, actually, legally permitted to own a tank. You'd just have to design and build it yourself. The government has no obligation to sell you one, and anything you came up with would likely be crap, a piece of aluminum foil with a cannon mounted on top.
 
As far as I know, in the past 200 years, no developed liberal democracy has ever fallen into dictatorship, that didn't have the support of almost all of the people (which would make fighting it difficult).
