If social distancing is effective

Why are governments the world over rendering hundreds of millions of their citizens jobless, impoverishing at least a billion people, endangering the family life of millions (straining marriages, increasing child and spousal abuse, and further postponing marriage among young people), bankrupting vast numbers of business owners and workers living paycheck to paycheck, and increasing suicides?

The reason given is that we must lock down virtually all human social and economic activity in order to prevent millions of people from dying of the coronavirus and overwhelming hospitals.

But is it true?

Was this lockdown necessary?

In order to answer these questions, we need to know how many people would have died from COVID-19 if we hadn't ruined the world's economic life.

The truth is we don't know.

And the truth is we never knew.

A large swath of the "expert" community cloaked itself with unscientific certitude, beginning, on March 16, with a model from the Imperial College London -- the source governments relied upon for the decision to ruin their economies -- which projected about 2.2 million Americans would die.

Almost every national leader, politician and media outlet in the world believed that model.

Leftists are not Americans. They deny that our president is their president. They are the enemies of the people.

I'm not a leftist and I deny he is my president. I am a patriot and you elected a criminal clown moronic traitor, and most people voted for Hillary, and there was Russian meddling...
obstruction of congress, attempt to cheat in this next election, total incompetence in fighting this pandemic.

This administration is a horrific failure on all fronts, from Iran, North Korea, our alliances with Europe, his treatment of immigrants. You name it.
Super fail. Pence should punch him in the face, have the Surgeon General induce a coma and take over until we un-elect this disgrace.

Seen any sedans going the same way you do or cruising around the neighborhood?

Scared?

Nothing you say or do affects me even a little bit, twerp. I say things that make you furious, so you want some fantasy leverage against me, ignorant troll.

Oooohhhh I'm terrified! Feel better about yourself?

Hello Darth,

How do you know the original projections were wrong?

Because you doubted them?

On what basis?

If the original projections were wrong that means the entire world took drastic measures based on a falsehood. I don't think governments all over the world are wrong. I think you're wrong to downplay the severity of covid-19.

Based on the models, the OH COVID guru estimated that OH had 100,000 COVID cases.

That was on March 16, today is April 15th. Even at a measly .01% mortality rate that equals 1,000 deaths and OH has only recorded 324. People who *already have* infections get zero benefit from SD. OH should have 3 times their death number *just based on their March 16th case estimate*.

Sounds like they over projected, just a tad.

And OH numbers should be way higher if you factor in a high transmission rate. I can see how they got their absurd 2 million dead estimate.

One happy effect of that would be the only people, left living, in OH, should be immune to COVID to by now. That’s what you call herd immunity, on steroids.

The models were less than worthless. Do you think the OH COVID guru should find another job?

Fortunately, you find yourself at odds with most of the rest of the world.

Social distancing is working, and it was absolutely the right thing to do.

It is absurd to look at results of an action and claim that proves the action was pointless.

Correct.

How do we know SD is working?

Because it’s beating the projection numbers. Wait a minute...how do we know if the projection numbers were right?

I don’t care what the gurus say and I don’t care how many degrees they have—there’s a bad problem with that.

Dude, if you are really a "health care" worker then you know the stats come from states that practiced SD and those that didn't. The pork plant in South Dakota is a big fucking clue.

Interesting anecdote.

Wow, a "healthcare" worker who doesn't accept medical science. Interesting revelation. Maybe there's more to your "furlough" than you're letting on.

And false. Outside of that single plant, South Dakota is one of the least-affected states.

Their governor didn't go crazy like so many of them have, so they are trying to smear her.

ROFL. Duh. No shit. Why do you think that is, Legion? Maybe a "healthcare" worker can explain how population density relates to social distancing.

It seems to imply not all regions should be totally locked down like NYC lol?

What do you deduce from the data, Professor Sparky?

That didn't stop the lying liberal media.

The ultra-liberal Washington Post is trying to slander South Dakota’s Republican governor for refusing to implement a one-size-fits-all policy in the form of a statewide shelter in place order as others have across the country.

The Post ran an article titled, “South Dakota’s governor resisted ordering people to stay home. Now it has one of the nation’s largest coronavirus hot spots”.

Yet South Dakota is no hot spot.

As of Wednesday, the state has seen fewer than 1,000 cases in total and six deaths attributed to the virus, according to the South Dakota Department of Health, even while remaining just one of five whose governor has refrained from issuing shelter in place orders.

“The people themselves are primarily responsible for their safety,” Noem said during a March press conference. “They are free to exercise their rights to work, to worship and to play or to even stay home or to conduct social distancing.”

“From Day 1, we’ve based our decisions on the science, facts, and data of the situation on the ground in South Dakota,” Noem said.
