It was common back in the day for black folk to internalize the word and call each other "niggah", so long as they were friends/family members (guys did NOT call women niggah normally, ESPECIALLY not someone's mother or sister). However, one black person calling another black person an "uncle tom" would DEFINITELY result in a serious fist fight. Now my mom raised me and my brothers with the edict, "nigger is the white man's insult to us. We should stop calling each other that." That word was VERBOTTEN in our house during family gatherings. Some relatives thought she was putting on airs, but she wasn't. She was dead serious.

That conflict and mindsets seem to be repeating in today's generation. As the saying goes, everything old is new again.
