I've decided to become a Buddhist

That things have happened and will happen is reality though... That is, to say they did/will happen is fact, and what is factual represents reality.

Certainly. But episodes, issues, feelings, ideas, motivations, everything only happens in the now. Not the past or future.

That's cool and fine. But there is a diffeent way.

There's only one thing in life, only one thing you'll ever have, or have ever had, and that's the present. Everything happens in the present. Where your mind is is where it is. Discard thought from time to time. Thought tends to operate in the past (illusory) and the future (illusory). This is your mind creating realities that exist outside the only true reality.

That's advice for an amoeba.

I could never be a Buddhist - or at least meditate as per Beefy's instructions, because I AM my mind, and that is all there is too it. I'm on board with Decartes on this one...
Meditation doesn't empty your mind, this is a misnomer.

Beefy, I was pretty certain you were joking.

Mind is an interference. Mind is everything one identifies with. Perceived responsibilities, problems, worries... Disidentification with "mind" is really where the understanding of reality is. Descartes said " I think therefore I am". But he didn't undertand that one needs not to "think" to be, to exist.

Existence is pure, it does not require mind or thought. Reality comes from a far more substantial place than either.

Yes, we all exist, and mind exists. However, one thing that seperates us from other living beings is that we can sense our 'mind', which allows us to conduct our thoughts, rather than letting them conduct us. Having a better awareness of what 'mind' is creates better opportunity for an individual to percieve things differently than what they habitually percieve things.

Me too!

I've recently learned, that buddhism is the one relgion that doesn't judge gay sex, and where you don't burn in hell for having sex with lusty, muscular, delicious men.

Hallelujah!

Cheers,

Ted

And remember, you are not your mind. Your mind is an istrument of your being, not the manifestation of it.
Since this post I have fought my urge to reply to it but cannot anymore. What the hell do you mean I am not my mind? The mind is just an abstraction of the brain. It is what I think with, it is what I try to still if I am going to meditate. But to say that I am NOT my brain is CRAZY! Remove that fucker from your head and try to meditate. Watch what happens to WHO YOU ARE when someone hits you hard enough in the head with a bat to damage the brain but not hard enough to kill you. Bet the YOU you were before the bat didn't drool as much as the YOU you will become does after the bat. Have you ever read the story of Phineas Gage? Old Phineas was a great guy, soft spoken, very responsible, wouldn't say shit if he had a mouthful. After the blasting rod he was tamping into a hole to make way for a railroad was blasted through his cranium, Phineas became a son of bitch. He was foul mouthed and foul behaved. It was because the big iron rod went through his frontal lobe and TURNED him INTO Phineas the bad when BEFORE the big iron rod he was Phineas the Good. He was his brain both before and after the accident. You are your brain. Your brain is EVERTHING your are. If you are nice, it's due to your brain, if you are mean, it's due to your brain. This you are not your mind (brain) stuff is esoteric non-sense.

Soc, the mind is not 'the brain'. They are two seperate things. Think of your mind as the 'conductor' of your brain. It is the entity that guides the brain. Nueroscientists have found some great discoveries in the brains of Buddhist monks, in that thought can actually alter the brain!

That's good news Ted. Hope you find happiness. Lay off the meth while your at it, it's hard to meditate on it.

Are you serious too?

Are you serious too?

Yes, very serious. You can actually physically change your brain through meditation, just as you can physically change your body through working out.

If you do not believe me, just look it up. It would be better if you actually discover that for yourself rather than thinking im crazy and wanting to discredit me :)
