Jenna Bush = off limits, Obama's daughters = fair game!

In reading other boards this morning I've seen the argument made that parents of 13 year olds wouldn't let their child go on a trip to a place the U.S. State Department has warned American visitors about, i.e. Mexico. I guess it is up to each parent to determine how comfortable they would feel sending their child on such a trip.

Where are they?

Mexico City (CNN) -- A strong earthquake rattled residents in Mexican resort towns and the nation's capital Tuesday, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake had a magnitude of 7.4.

The epicenter was about 15 miles (25 km) east of Ometepec, Guerrero, the USGS said, and its depth was about 12.4 miles (20 km).

The USGS initially reported the magnitude of the quake at 7.9, but later revised that figure downward. Mexican President Felipe Calderon said in a Twitter post it was 7.8.

I think I would if they were schoolmates with the President's daughter and therefore were going to be accompanied by the best security in the world. Let's face it, they are safer there, under those conditions, than they are when they get on their schoolbus in the morning.

They went to one of the safest regions in Mexico, they are not in one of the border towns. I don't think the Obamas would send their daughter into harms way, it is just stupid to think that they would. They seem above average as parents.

Except that there is no State Department advisory with respect to all of Mexico, just to certain parts of Mexico. Where she went, Oaxaca, is not under any such State Department advisory.

There are missionary groups that go, are you saying that is wrong? Parents in Alaska take their kids and their friends to Mexico, and Hawaii all the time, why do you feel it is inappropriate, don't you usually stay out of other people business?

:palm:
The American taxpayers are not picking up the tab to send missionary groups to Mexico, but we are picking up the tab to send the little twat to Mexico for spring break.

she is in Oaxaca... which got hit with the initial tremor and some aftershocks, but not the full magnitude felt at the epicenter. My guess is the Obamas hearts were in there throats over the safety of their daughter and her friends. I hope they are all ok. The potential death of a child (or injury) has to be the worst thing a parent can face other than death itself.

really?.....what part do you disagree with....that Obama works for us?......that he sent his daughter to Mexico?......or that it cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars?........because those are the only three facts involved.........

We want to get the best people possible in our country to run for President. IMO if we put restrictions of what children of the President can do we are going to narrow the field of those who wish to run for the office. And by that I don't mean the child should get to travel around the world for four years straight on tax payer dollars. But I do think it means the child can go on a trip with their classmates. I'm going to assume the Obama's paid for their daughters trip like the other parents did. The security would obviously be paid by the taxpayers.

and I for one am willing to take a candidate who's slightly less qualified if it doesn't cost us an extra couple million......

So you basically want a President who doesn't have kids or if they do have kids the kids never travel while their father is President?

Yeah, until a Republican is President anD PMP will think it is just dandy. Never saw any complaints from him when the two Bush girls were vacationing.
