Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson said Friday that he's grateful the rest of the country has sat up and taken notice of the tragic slaying of Trayvon Martin. But he can't help but wonder: Why has it taken so long for everyone else to recognize the chronic injustices that African Americans face?

"We're surprised that everyone else is surprised," Jackson told the Los Angeles Times. African Americans have tried for decades to get the rest of America to understand their plight, he said, particularly their beliefs that justice is still elusive in many parts of America, especially the Deep South.

Then along comes the Trayvon Martin case, and facts that are not in contention: Volunteer neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman pursued and then gunned down the unarmed 17-year-old last month, and never faced arrest because police said there was no evidence to contradict his claim that he fired in self-defense.

"I hope that this will be a transformative moment," Jackson said.

Looks like the two exchanged words and then this Zimmerman dude gunned the kid down. Yank the asshole's fire arms permit and charge him for murder.

I don't know if you need a permit. But yeah. If he killed an unarmed kid and isn't going to jail something is wrong...

A little story, from about 20 years ago.
I was driving in Phoenix and as I was driving down one of the main streets; I saw two kids walking on the sidewalk, in my direction.
One of him had his shirt off and was flicking it at signs, posts, etc.
As I drove past, he flicked it at my windshield.

I drove down about a block, turned around, and drove back the opposite way.
Drove past where they were walking, about a block, and pulled into a parking lot and waited outside my car.
When they got closer, they saw me, and crossed the street.
I also crossed the street and confronted them, about what they had done.
They were both about 13, 14, or maybe 15 years old.
One was kind of skinny and the other one was a little chubby. The skinny one was the one that had his shirt off.

They both started off with they didn't do anything and what was I talking about.
The chubby kid then puts his right arm out at a right angle to his body, bends it at the elbow, and puts his open hand behind his back.
This made me believe that he either had a gun, or was trying to act like he had one; so I tell him that when he brings that hand out, it better be empty or have a turd in it.
While I'm talking, I'm moving to my left and putting the skinny kid between me and the chubby one.
I ask him what is he going to do, shoot me in front of witnesses and point to a guy mowing his yard.
I'm about 15 feet away and my thinking was if he pulls out something larger then a .22, he runs a chance of hitting his buddy in the back or if it is a .22; then he's going to have to hit a vital area, real quick.

They were now standing with their back to the street and my intention was to bull rush them, if he came out holding anything, and send them both flying into traffic.

The chubby kid brings his hand out (empty) and acts like he wasn't doing anything.
I told both of them that they were stupid; because if I had been carrying, I would have been within my legal right to have shot him and if there had been a cop close enough, I would have had them both arrested for threatening and intimidation.
They both said something to each other and took off in different directions.
I went back to my car and continued on my way.

Jackson must have been doing way too much dope if he missed the civil rights movement in the 60s.

So, let me get this right, a kid flicks his t-shirt at your car and you feel you have the right to shoot him for it.

Wow, do you have road rage as well?

jackson is a moron then...perhaps he should start by considering the following:

According to federal crime statistics, homicide is the leading cause of death among African-American males ages 15 to 34. These figures also indicate that between 1976 and 2004, 94 percent of black murder victims were killed by black offenders.

Ugh. I threw up a little reading this. You're a sad case, Yurt.

you were most foolish for such a small problem

what did you hope to accomplish

prove that a couple of kids could do something stupid or foolish, besides, who did they really hurt except maybe your feelings

I know you just want something to use to point fingers; but you might want to re-read the post and see where you screwed up.

So in your view, this kind of behavior is OK and is no problem?

Looks like the two exchanged words and then this Zimmerman dude gunned the kid down. Yank the asshole's fire arms permit and charge him for murder.

From all I've read on this from the day after it happened, Zimmerman was wrong in so many ways. He had a gun. He failed to stop following after the dispatcher told him to, when he reported to police his 'suspect.' It should be enough for a grand jury, once he's charged.

However, he did sustain injuries from some sources:

Would he if he'd followed the dispatcher's advice? Unlikely. That's what the idea of grand jury and a trial are about.

while i understand the calls for an immediate arrest, would this be such a good thing?

why not wait until all of the facts are in and a request for a speedy trial could not result in a not guilty verdict

There's more than enough to arrest and let him out on bail. Really a grand jury would be better than the knives of press and Sharpton and know Obama.

So in your view, this kind of behavior is OK and is no problem?

i did not say that, i said that the two kids did something stupid or follish

in no way did i condone what they did...or your response for that matter

having said that, maybe you frightened them from doing something more foolish, however, i think that you wasted your time

when you were young, did you not ever do something foolish

Threads merge. There is no need for so many separate threads about the same thing.

All this Trayvon Martin stuff is essentially the same. It's cluttering up the board. Keep it to a couple threads.
