Before there was a United States. Is there any doubt that ancestors of Euro-Americans had a strongly likelihood of being slaves, serfs (not much better), indentured servitude or just plain old dominance under despotism?

Thomas Hobbes described what society would be like if it broke down as "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short’", which is a pretty good description of life of all our ancestors in ancient times.
