how do you figure? the gun itself has to be illegal in order to make possession of it illegal, unless you're a felon who is not allowed any possession. i believe, for example you can be charged with simply buying an illegal gun, you don't have to take possession of it.

so your argument is, the founding fathers, over 200 years ago - who understood arms to be simple guns such as flintlocks - really meant that nuclear ICMBs - should be freely owned by all, as the right to nuclear "arms" should not be infringed....

how about a firearm that shoots mustard gas? legal gun?

the framers and founders believed that standing armies were banes to liberty, that the people, trained in arms, were the best defense of a free state. So yes, any weapon that can be used by the people, shall not be infringed.

I have to wonder, why is it that people assume that government is their master and that they may only have what government tells them they can?

As George Costanza once quipped, "My little man is an idiot". He had asked Jerry for some advice and Jerry responded that he should listen to that inner voice, that "little man", inside us all.

That said, there are people whose "little man" is a psychotic, raving lunatic. Thus, government attempts to protect society from such folks.

The framers and founders believed that women should not have the vote.

The framers and founders believed that only whites should have the vote.

The framers and founders believed that only state legislatures should elect Senators.

government has no responsibility to protect society from such folks, nor any liability for it's failure to do so. YOU are responsible for your safety and protection, thus the right to bear arms.

yes, and throughout our history, they've amended the constitution to correct some of those errors, while also screwing up the republic with direct election of senators.

Of course the government has an obligation. Not only does the Preamble state, "to promote the general welfare" .......

And when you have a major newspaper refer to our troops as "killers" or YOU start a thread saying "killers in Afghanistan.." and then post a story attaching that attribute regarding US troop actions, THEN maybe you might have a point.
