CARSON CITY, Nevada (AP) -- A killer's execution was halted 90 minutes before he was set to die amid arguments from death penalty opponents that the state should wait until the U.S. Supreme Court reviews the constitutionality of lethal injections.

The Nevada Supreme Court issued the last-minute stay Monday for William Castillo, who beat an elderly woman to death with a tire iron.

Castillo, 34, had declined to file appeals of his own and prison officials have said he was ready to die. The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada appealed to halt any executions in the state.

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed September 25 to review the method of lethal injection used by most states. The high court will hear a challenge early next year from two inmates in Kentucky who claim that lethal injection as practiced by that state amounts to cruel and unusual punishment, in violation of the Eighth Amendment.

Yes...this case is discussed alot.........

around these parts...the guy has admitted to his crime and wants the punishment...albeit like you said the false outrage groups are at it again..
What puzzles me how is Lethal Injection Cruel? If anyone ever had major surgery...well the first injection puts you out...the second stops the heart and all other bodily functions! The person would never feel anything...just never wake up!

Although I don't support the death penalty, I've never seen any real evidence that says it's painful. The barbituates alone that they give them could kill them. However, they certainly do knock them out within the first few seconds. The other drugs just bring a quicker end to the ordeal. What do they want? The goddamn electric chair?

I would say it is certainly faux outrage. Getting an injection is cruel and unusual? Hardly.... especially when compared to getting beaten to death with a tire iron.

He was reported to be ready to die, and had accepted his sentence. He had refused appeals of the murder. This is a true belief of his, that the punishment would be cruel and unusual. And don't turn around... "OH YEAH HAVE SYMPATHY WITH THE CRIMINAL I THINK WE SHOULD BEAT HIM WITH A TIRE IRON"... two wrongs don't make a right. And he's shown remorse.

Sorry, I am against the death penalty. I don't feel any means is human.

When talking about which procedure causes the least pain, lethal injection would certainly be it. If they're not going to rule the death penalty cruel and unusual, I see no reason to abolish lethal injection, as all other common means are clearly more painful.

Yes, the injection would be the least painful, but still not something I believe we should practice in an industrialized modern society.

Would capital punishment be more acceptable in a largely hunter/gatherer society which dabbled lightly in domesticated animals and simple agriculture? If so, why?
