Well, there are ignorant people on both the left and the right, as well as very intelligent people on both sides, so I don't think that's really it. It has more to do with rumors and peer pressure. The worst rumor popular with the right was coined by Reagan: "Government is the problem." The right has run with this, and dialed it up to the point where the popular view is sheer hatred of government. This has led to a loss of confidence in government and been augmented with a loss of confidence in the media and major major institutions.
The right doesn't want to believe any news that doesn't support their politics, so they simply call the mainstream news 'fake' and instead run with whatever right wing propaganda they prefer.
They are also very careful not to offend the racists and xenophobes among them, because they understand very well that the Republican party cannot win elections without the racist/xenophobe vote.
A big problem for the right is they are totally bought in to the idea of American exceptionalism. They think Americans are 'born better.' Why would anyone who thinks they are superior want equality?
