Liberals are Bigots.

Came across this little beauty from Jan 2009, and decided to post it for your reading enjoyment.

Thoughts?

How nice to read such a fair minded, unbiased piece of genuine reportage. The first two sentences say it all, don't they?

Liberals often trot around proclaiming a monopoly on tolerance and open-mindedness. This claim is categorically untrue. Liberals are some of the most bigoted people in America.
Great use of language: trot ... you mean like hooved animal? proclaiming ... announcing formally? a monopoly on tolerance ... you mean like this article? claim... state to be true? Liberals are some of the most bigoted.... some? who are the others? RW loonies?

Let's rewrite it shall we?
'Liberals travel about telling people that they have a monopoly on tolerance.' That is the lie, Granule. That is the lie. Its just that when you are looking nonsense you will keep searching til you find it and ignore the sense that exists alongside. And you call other people bigoted??? You are either trolling, sir, or too stupid to put your shoes on the right feet.

That is because US politics has redefined the word. Not being part of US politics I prefer to stick to the correct definition. However my comments did not concern Obama, who seems like a reasonable man to me, but they concerned the language used by the right wing press and how that language can affect the readers. (The left can also use language to their advantage)

No, his shoes are all labeled by his mom, TGIF (toes go in first).

If she didn't contradict her own point in the first paragraph one could at least consider her rather narrow minded, one could say 'bigoted' assertion. Open minded people get reversed in her rather silly logic. So one can only conclude, you have to be a bigot so as not to be a bigot. Huh.

But thanks for the opportunity to present the other side of the coin. If you would like to understand modern American conservatism, I would recommned the following books. Below the books is a bunch of information worth reading to counter the negative impact American conservatism has had on the American dream.

'Invisible Hands: The Making of the Conservative Movement from the New Deal to Reagan' Kim Phillips-Fein
'The Rhetoric of Reaction: Perversity, Futility, Jeopardy' Albert O. Hirschman
'The Reactionary Mind: Conservatism from Edmund Burke to Sarah Palin' Corey Robin
'The Culture of Contentment' John Kenneth Galbraith
'Ill Fares the Land' Tony Judt

"If conservatism is the ideology of freedom, how come they’re the ones who are always trying to take that freedom away from us, especially women and minorities? Why did they fight against the effort to end slavery, or to give women and minorities the vote, or to protect them from discrimination? Why are they still supporting efforts to disenfranchise minorities?" http://www.regressiveantidote.net/Articles/If_Conservatism_Is_The_Ideology_of_Freedom.html

""Ideas," a distinguished conservative named Richard Weaver once wrote, "have consequences." Americans have learned something about the consequences of conservative ideas during the Bush years that they never had to confront in the more amiable Reagan period. As a way of governing, conservatism is another name for disaster. And the disasters will continue, year after year, as long as conservatives, whose political tactics are frequently as brilliant as their policy-making is inept, find ways to perpetuate their power." http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2006/0607.wolfe.html

"Before analyzing current-day conservatism's machinery of deception, let us outline the main arguments of conservatism. Although these arguments have changed little through history, they might seem unfamiliar to many people today, indeed even to people who claim to be conservatives. That unfamiliarity is a very recent phenomenon. Yet it is only through the classical arguments and their fallacies that we can begin to analyze how conservatism operates now." http://polaris.gseis.ucla.edu/pagre/conservatism.html

"Starr's piece lays out why liberalism works better than conservatism, but conservatism has entrenched interests on its side and that can be a powerful force for the status quo, regardless of the status quo." http://www.princeton.edu/~starr/articles/articles07/Starr.WhyLiberalismWorks.pdf
