WASHINGTON (AP) - Liberals read more books than conservatives. The head of the book publishing industry's trade group says she knows why - and there's little flattering about conservative readers in her explanation.

"The Karl Roves of the world have built a generation that just wants a couple slogans: 'No, don't raise my taxes, no new taxes,'" Pat Schroeder, president of the American Association of Publishers, said in a recent interview. "It's pretty hard to write a book saying, 'No new taxes, no new taxes, no new taxes' on every page."

Schroeder, who as a Colorado Democrat was once one of Congress' most liberal House members, was responding to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll that found people who consider themselves liberals are more prodigious book readers than conservatives.

Interesting and sometimes it really shows. I just finished reading "god is not Great" Hitchens and found it extremely interesting. I am now halfway through "Islam" by Karen Armstrong. I know I read more than most of the conservative members of my family!

The title is likely true. but you are still just guessing. Right??

What kind of books? Fiction or non-Fiction. I KNOW that damn few lib-ruls bought MAnn Coulter's books or Rush or Sean Hannity's books. I also think rightwingers read lots of books about investing and historical books. lib-ruls on the other hand I think read more fiction. But Schoeder oversimplifies.

Yeah, you're really going to get unbiased information from PAT SCHROEDER. The only thing Pat Schroeder really ever did with her life was trying to get copyrights to last literally forever and never letting anything fall into the public domain so that it can be shared freely.

yeah we liberals buy fewer Playboys just for the articles too :)

I'm curious as to why you would think that historical books are a right wing thing?

I read a lot of history books, and always have. Harry Truman said the best way to learn history is by reading biographies. Those have always been a favorite, but other types of history books as well. I personally have not come across so many right wingers who are well-versed in history, other than they are often self-proclaimed experts on the Reagan years.

I am projecting nothing just wondering why you obviously did not understand the opening article of this thread.

I love history, I think the lack is in the fact that you don't meet many right-wingers. Not in any lack of the reading skill of right-wingers.

Umm didn't bush and dixie say history was in the past and we had to look to the future ?

And true I do not like to hang with any righties.

It was interesting to note that the poll showed that there was no difference in the percentage of people who were either Rs or Ds in the amount who would admit to reading no books that year.

I can't imagine not reading, I read about 2 per week. Unless it is a big book, sometimes it takes a full week to read it.

Yeah I read one or two a week. mostly entertainment stuff.
I am on my third reading of "My Pet Pony".
Next week is DR. Suess week :)

Cons read more comic books.

I'm not buying it that Cons are more schooled in history. It is their ignorance of history, that led them to blunder into iraq.

Remember the run up to the war? We were trying to explain to them the shia/sunni thing? The history of Iraq? The difference between sunni al qaeda extremists, and Bathiist socialists?

I've met enough of them on message boards, and they have been borderline retarded historically.

But I did say, that I had not met "so many". I have met right wingers who had some decent knowledge of history certainly. I just have not noticed it any remarkable measure. Nothing that would lead me to believe right wingers "mostly read historical" books.

I mostly read Science Fiction right now. I am studying up on style and prose, preparing to write a submission, first three chapters and outline, for publishing soon.

However, I like 'alternate history' novels, and they aren't very cool if you don't know the original history and where they are different. Well, they can still be good, but you miss a lot if you don't understand the differences in the 'timelines'.
