In justifying his remarks, the North Carolina Republican pointed to his own homeschooling education.

"If you are not becoming an engineer or a doctor or a lawyer, I highly encourage you to drop out. It's a scam," the congressman said.

The native of Asheville, North Carolina also implored those listening to "try and have a great job, you should be as successful as you possibly can."

Cawthorn spent a single semester at Patrick Henry College in 2017 before dropping out with mostly D grades, according to a deposition obtained by The Washington Post. He was also reportedly rejected from the U.S. Naval Academy.

I agree with her, knowledge would destroy their way of life.

You speak of knowledge yet for so many schools today speech is considered violence and therefore it is ok to not be challenged to differing viewpoints and ideas. When it’s the beliefs you share that are deemed acceptable it’s no surprise you like it. But that isn’t about growth or “knowledge”.

What a dumb thing to say. He sure is going after the stupid vote.

Whatever jobs are available to someone with no college degree, all those and more are available to a person with one. And often for higher pay.

And the person who finishes college gets the satisfaction of knowing they've accomplished something. The basic standard of higher education. They get that sense of reward for hard work that they will always have for the rest of their life, with no regrets about would have, could have.

College doesn't need to cost a lot. Prestigious big name schools cost a lot. But there are also many state colleges that are very affordable. Some are even free if you can get in.

That happens a small amount, and then is amplified by the whackjob megaphone.

I agree it should not happen. On balance however there is still a huge amount of knowledge gained at colleges and Universities, most of it, in my opinion, gained outside the classroom. Its just about the only place in this culture where it is acceptable to dedicate a part of your life to something other than the presuit of profit.

This type of knowledge is deadly to their way of life and thinking, because it promotes progress, and they hate progress because they are so invested in the past and the belief that things should b as they believe it always was, AKA, "Great Again."

Nah, Your first paragraph is denial and an attempt to downplay what’s happening because again it shares your ideology. True growth occurs when you are challenged and exposed to new thoughts and ideas. Creating safe spaces to avoid that is pretty close to the opposite. And that’s the environment on most campuses today.

(and most people go to college to earn a degree to get the best job possible - aka the pursuit of profit)

I see you added an additional paragraph just reinforcing this is all ideological to you. It’s not about “learning” at all.

Holy smoke.

Conservatives envision a world without mathematicians, physicists, historians, oceanographers, philosophers, geneticists, wildlife biologists, architects, archeologists, psychologists, chemists.

Its not denial, I know it happens, but, for example, much less than it happens at workplaces. It should not happen because I agree with your second sentence. That is not the norm on campus today, but it happens and when it does Fox screams about it for weeks.

Many might to go college to ultimately be able to pursue profit, but that does not negate the effect of spending 4 years not seeking profit. My experience was that most people went to college to prevent having to try to make a profit for at least a few more years.

I hope they follow his advice.

Its about learning, because the natural progression of the world is advancement and progress, the way to advancement and progress is to gain knowledge.

If one is going to college simply with the thought of making money, they probably should drop out.

Going to college generally means having an eye towards a career. But one should be there first and foremost to study something they enjoy and will be fulfilling to them in the long run.

Not everyone is going to enjoy chemical engineering or law torts.

Workplaces and college are two very different things. Not even sure where you are going with that.

By making the Fox reference it just show once again your head is in a partisan mindset. This is about politics and how people vote, not about actual growth or knowledge.

I just read an excellent book from 2019 called The Coddling of the American Mind (just offering one example) by two non right wing professors about what’s happening on campuses. And their research is faaaar from the only literature out there. So either you don’t pay attention to it or it doesn’t bother you.

But let’s just say it’s about the opposite of the Free Speech Movement at Berkeley in the mid 60’s

Post your evidence. And FOX is not a reliable source.

I see. So learning and progress entails not being exposed to differing viewpoints or ideas. Only getting reinforced what you already think.

To each his own but you and I have a very different idea of learning.

Political opinions are not the basis of knowledge and learning. The overwhelming majority of university research has nothing to do with political opinion.
