The fact is, I have a woman and 3 boys in this house. You come calling at 4AM you better be knocking. You can rest assured I'll be answering a door with a gun in my hand. Even get made fun of for it. I'm not going to be on Forensic Files willingly.
invite them in first and when they are all the way in then blast away and be sure to put at least one knife in their hands
one time they knocked on my door on a saturday morning and i answered the door naked with a two handed broadsword in my hands...they hurriedly left

If it is dark in your house and you see an intruder in another room how do you know if he is armed or not? I've fortunately not had that situation so I don't know how I'd react but how willing would you be to risk finding out?

Drunk and unarmed people can be very dangerous. It would depend on whether he stopped when I told him to, where he was going, and how he was acting.
Imagine a guy trying to sneak in your house in the dark as opposed to a dude who comes in, stumbles around aimlessly exclaiming how different the place looks. Either one can be dangerous for different reasons. If the drunk dude stopped when I demanded it (he's in my frickin' house, it will be an order) he is likely safe, if not he is likely in danger of getting shot.
At some point he is responsible for his actions, even if he is drunk.

Truth be told I'm not all that well prepared if someone breaks into my place. I don't have a gun and if I was in bed I don't really have anything I could grab in the bedroom that would make a good weapon. I would be praying that it was a drunk lost guy.
I have night sights. I know my house better than any intruder, I would use the dark in my favor. However, the drunk would likely find a switch and turn it on... If he wasn't planning on acting nefariously.
The idea that he is innocent because he was drunk is weird to me. How do we know it was an accident? (I should probably read the article... lol).
If you have nothing, go into the master bath and pull off the towel rack bar. Even a small man can pull it off, and any weapon is better than nothing.
i have not been able to find my handgun since we moved...
on the other hand, i am 6'2" and we have some very heavy solid wood dining room chairs that i can stand on and not have them creak
we also have 4 very nosy cats...
