Mary Jo Kopechne back in spotlight

More than 40 years after her death, the name Mary Jo Kopechne has skyrocketed to the top of Web searches today on the news of the death of Sen. Ted Kennedy.

Kopechne, 28, was killed July 18, 1969, when Kennedy drove his car off a bridge and into a pond on Chappaquiddick Island. Kopechne was found in the car's back seat 10 hours later.

The search term "mary jo kopechne" was the top item on Google Trends just after 1 p.m. today, a metric for Web searches that are the fastest rising. The search engine has given the search term a ranking of "on fire."

On Twitter, her name is out-trending the phrase "Senator Ted Kennedy," an indication that more people are tweeting her name than his.

Kennedy went on to plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.

Glad to see everyone wants to know more about the woman killed by a drunken U.S. democrat senator so long ago.
 
She never got justice so she gets the luxury of being Teddy's legacy.

Glad he's finally gone from the process. What a selfish prick to stay in office until the very end. He should have retired long ago and left someone to else carry on. He's one predictable vote anyway, why did it matter for him to stay in office.

The man's dead I say let him rest in peace. But his legacy will always include killing this woman. I'm sorry your partisanship can't handle that.

Whatever, nice excuse. The plausible reason is (Edit) Kennedy was responsible for her death and thus on his death she is remembered. Only takes a little common sense to figure that out.

The right has smeared this womans name for decades.

She was a 28 year old woman who had a business degree and worked tirelessly for the Kennedy family elections.

She was involved in writing speeches and was one of the "boileroom girls" who accessed daily the political enviroment at the time and helped them wade the waters in directing the campaign.

She was an up and comer in politics.

The whole reason she was there at the site was to reward her and the other "boileroom girls" for their dedication to the project.

She was NOBODIES date and was not the hobitch the right played her to be all these years.

Please spare me your phoney respect for her.

She woud dispise your depiction of her as much as I do.

how have they tried to smear her? She would despise that people say Kennedy left her in a car to drown? I've heard of partisanship but that's taking it to a new level to claim if she were here now she would defend Kennedy's actions that night.

I've never heard anyone from "The Right" describe her as a hobitch like you just did. She was a good looking gal and that along with her brains is why Ted had no problem hitting on her, cheating on his wife and disgracing his family in the process. I've always suspected that she refused his drunken advances so he killed her.

You forget, what is important here is that the Right have a chance to demonize another Liberal.
