The difference is that now 95% or something like that of those injured by enemy fire survive because of improvrments in the treatement.

I guarantee there are more people being blown up during the Iraq war than were injured or killed by similar incidents in 85 or at any time since the Vietnam war.
 
The survival rate in Iraq is far better than any military engagement before. But that means more amputees / disabled and TBI than ever before as well.
