If no one got them help then there is not a record of having been treated for a mental illness, and there is the problem. Background checks can only deal with what is documented.

And if legislation is attempted, there's a 6-3 moron advantage in the SCOTUS to rule on its legitimacy.

Democrats continually do a poor job of demonstrating that they're only going for background checks, assault weapons bans, and urban area handgun licensing.
Trumpanzees aren't going to agree with any restrictions at all, but fuck them.
More reasonable firearms hobbyists also think that the intent is an attack on the 2nd Amendment.
Democrats will never get more sensible gun laws passed until they make it clear that they're not trying to repeal a uniquely American right that has existed since 1791.
Read some of the posts on this forum by anti-gun zealots.
Many of them make it clear that they have no use for private citizen gun ownership at all.
In expressing these sentiments, they're inadvertently impeding efforts to mitigate the massacre of innocents from gun violence.
