I want them to help support the nation. We have far too few younger workers to support the Baby Boom generation in its dotage. Immigrants can fix that. If you want to put constraints on guest-worker welfare eligibility, to address your worry that someone might be getting away with something, fine. But we need those workers and we need them now.

You may not be aware, but I'm actually in my 20s. So, when I'm talking about bringing in younger workers from abroad, I'm talking about competitors from my own generation. This isn't about me wanting cheap stuff for me. I could get that as easily with automation or outsourcing, obviously. It's more about the needs of older Americans in retirement, as well as about the long-term solvency of this nation in the face of its disastrous demographic imbalance. Those are challenges we can easily rise to, if we can only get past the crippling fear of right-wing xenophobes.
