National divorce would be devastating for red states

A so-called "national divorce" would work out poorly for red states, which a new analysis shows depend heavily on blue states.

MSNBC economic analyst Steve Rattner presented data on "Morning Joe" showing that states won by Donald Trump contribute far less to the federal budget than states won by President Biden, which Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and some other Republicans said should be separated from one another.

"The Trump states, virtually every single state except for Utah, don't ask me why Utah, got back more from Washington than it paid," Rattner said. "So it would not really work very well to their advantage to leave. In fact, the top states for getting a better deal from Washington are Kentucky, Mississippi and West Virginia."

Higher state-level poverty rates correlate with support for Republican candidates, Rattner said, while Democratic-leaning states tend to have higher income.

"You can see with your eye that the red states tend to be above the national average in poverty," Rattner said, while presenting a chart showing that correlation. "The blue states tend to be below the national average in poverty. Another way to look at it is if -- this is by counties but you get to the same place, on the right, how much of the [gross domestic product] is produced in these places -- red counties, 29 percent, blue counties, 71 percent. They're suffering more economically, and that does lead to the question of, how does that result in more money going to these states?"

Weird how decade after decade, the liberals have the same principled political philosophy to guide them (infrastructure, education, minimum wage, universal healthcare, labor rights) - while conservatives frantically bounce to and fro between school prayer, bans on gay marriage, wars on Christmas, Sharia law, CRT, wokeism, just trying to see what sticks to the wall.

That's a narrow POV. The result would be Civil War in a fight for resources. Agricultural states are always poorer than industrial states, but industrial states can't eat their machines or paper. There would also be the fights over water.

So long, California: Major county votes to study secession
ethnically diverse county that is politically mixed, as well as the fifth-most populous in the state and the largest in the nation by area. San Bernardino’s 20,000 square miles (51,800 square kilometers) is comprised of more land than nine states.

The votes speaks to the alienation that some voters feel from a statehouse long dominated by Democrats who have made little progress on the growing homeless crisis, soaring housing costs and rising crime rates while residents pay among the highest taxes in the country.

It is amusing to hear the postulation that following such a (fantasy) 'divorce,' (Something MTG is acquainted with,) that there would be this huge flight of people leaving Blue America for Red America, presumably for the 'better government' and 'greater' economy.

It's a poorly considered notion. The reality is that the disadvantaged who are dependent on government social programs in red states would get cut off and face a choice of becoming destitute or moving to Blue America.

And without all the poor people to exploit how would all the slum lords, payday loan sharks, and buy-here pay-here Republicans make any money or spend it in their local economies? What are they going to do? Rip one another off like dogs chasing each other's tails?

And for those who think Red America would prosper, take a good look at states with low gas taxes. The roads are horrible. Gas taxes are low, and that means they don't spend enough to maintain the roads. Major roads and US highways are fine, but once you get onto the back roads speed limits are not required. Going at normal speed would destroy your vehicle. There are almost more pot holes than pavement. Washed out bridges are not promptly replaced. Aging detour signs lead motorists on a long route down pothole strewn roads. Gas taxes might be low but that means you are often spending your savings driving further at variable speeds trying to save your tires and alignment.

Good ol blue state California produces a huge part of our agriculture, as does Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The blue states wont go hungry.

MSNBC?????? I didn't even realize they were still around. In my best hysterical leftist voice, CRAZY SOURCE!!!!" That's as objective as an Arab telling us how evil they think Jews are.

The Republicans have become the party of resentment and hate. They turn on Fox News every night to see who they need to resent next. Fox News preaches Resentment, and they never miss a sermon! They march out the next day like Christian Soldiers to carry out and spread the resentment in their dystopian world!

A typical reply from an ignoramus who doesn't know Steve Rattner or heard him speak. He is about as non political as you can get.

Hello Jarod,

They abandoned their core principles with “W” and all they have left is culture wars.

The culture wars have been a long time in the making.

And there is a major denial going over racism.

Basically, anybody opposed to CRT is in denial over racism.

Hello floridafan,

Good ol blue state California produces a huge part of our agriculture, as does Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The blue states wont go hungry.

But will CA get enough water to continue to do that?

The Mighty Colorado River doesn't even reach the sea any more. Every bit of it is used up by humans before it ever gets close.

And all those lakes along the way are getting pretty low.

Hard to say, but their recent rain storms have been a big help.

You're going to fly them over the "flyover states"? Have you looked at a map of the railroad tracks and Interstates? LOL

This fantasy about secession is just that, a fantasy.
