This is a common myth about Woody. Yea sure Woody could get stubborn in games and would decide to run it down the throats of the opponent doing that. Lost some by doing that too and pryer to the late sixties everyone was playing the I formation or the wishbone which are run dominated.
In the late 60’s Woody led the pack by switching to the T-Formation and playing a more dual threat offense. He consistently lead the Big Ten and most of the nation in passing. He had some very good duel threat QB’s too. Like Rex Kern, Cornelius Greene and Art Schlichter.
So that’s pretty much a myth about Woody. He was conservative but he also stayed current on new innovations and relied a lot on the sports science program to stay ahead of the competition. Woody may have been conservative but he wasn’t stupid. Woody did have other issues though. LOL
