First let me say, Ron Paul is a non-starter as of last night. His only chance to win a state, came and went. Paul is done.

Rick Santorum did much better than the media and pundits would have you believe today. He was tremendously outspent in Ohio, and lost by one point. Had Gingrich not been in the race, Santorum would have won in a cakewalk, and this is the case in many of the races yesterday. Granted, Virginia was a glaring embarrassment for both Gingrich and Santorum, not getting on the ballot...wtf? But if Newt were to bow out, Santorum could pull off the upset... otherwise, Romney will win the GOP nomination.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the 'behind the scenes' stuff in the next week, this is a pivotal point in the GOP primary process, I do believe.

Newt came in third everywhere last night, except Georgia. If the electorate wanted Newt, last night was when it would have been apparent in OK and TN, and he came in behind Romney. Santorum, on the other hand, did very well in every precinct outside a major metro area. If he could benefit just a little from Newt's departure, he could conceivably defeat Romney, but that is the only shot Santorum has. Romney will be the nominee if Newt stays in the race for a few more weeks, Santorum can't catch Romney in delegates.
 
let's explore the obvious.....if people wanted Santorum you wouldn't have had to start this thread......I'll be honest, his record doesn't suggest he's a reliable fiscal conservative.....he was one of those idiots spending money like a drunken Democrat in the Senate.....
 
Last night Newt said he was just glad to pick up delegates. He said that he is in it to the end. We know that Santorum is staying, and Romney is staying. No one is going to get to the convention with enough to seal the deal. Newt is too egotistical to withdraw. Santorum has no reason to withdraw and Romney doesn't depend on the voters that vote for either of them in the Primaries. IF Newt withdraws, Santorum probably wins more primaries, but that will GUARANTEE an Obama re-election. Independent women and centrist dem women will NEVER vote for Santorum. Romney needs to tell donors to heap money on Newt to keep him in the race. Dems need to heap money on Santorum to try to move more delegates to him. Sane thinking, Fiscally conservative socially moderate people need to go to Gary Johnson's website and then start steering their friends there. It is time for a true SMALL GOVERNMENT conservative. Something damn few people on this board have ever seen.

Independent women and centrist dem women will NEVER vote for Santorum.

Here's the thing... maybe not. But the election is not going to be decided on Women's Issues. It's the ECONOMY STUPID! This idiotic "War on Women" thing, is from the Liberal MSM and Obama sycophants. THE ISSUE in poll after poll, survey after survey, state after state, is the state of the ECONOMY! and THAT will be what decides Election 2012.

Then why does Santorum insist on continuing with the social conservative line about abortion, birth control and fags? When will he actually talk hard facts and figures on the economy and what a Santorum presidency would mean?
 
Even if Newt dropped out Santorum would have to gather 65% of all the delegates out there to get 1144. If Santorum dropped out Newt would have to gather 70%.
 
In contrast Mitt Romney has to gather 48% of the outstanding delegates in order to get the nomination.

This doesn't mean that Mitt is the nominee. It could be a brokered convention. We could wind up with somebody that isn't even in the field.

right now about the only thing that can save the reps, is another serious downturn in the economy

He was also ahead by almost 18 pts as of last week and his lead evaporated in that time.

The media is creaming their pants over santorum, what planet are you on.

I woke up to the headline today of:

"Super tuesday brings new bruises for romney"

Which is LOL considering Romney won 6/10 states, came 2nd in 3 others.

Let me repeat... out of 10 contests, he won 6, came in second in 3.

He won 1.4 million votes vs. 800k of santorums, he won 200 delegates.

What exactly would he have to do for last night not to be a pretty solid performance? Jesus . . .

Romney is inevitable. He is the borg. You will be assimilated. You will vote for him.

The math does not add up, even if newt dropped out tomorrow. Santorum would need to clear about ~70% of all remaining delegates to win the nomination. It's just not going to happen given how the states divvy up their delegates proportionally in so many areas.

If americans wanted to vote for liberal policies, why would they vote for a republican when they can vote for the real thing?

Say what you want, the economy is the top issue right now in the nation, and romney is currently LEADING over obama. with respect to that issue.

And that's with Romney getting beat up everyday from all sides.

Sochead, Santorum didn't continue or start with this shit, the liberal media introduced this from speeches he gave back in 1998! Tellya what... let's go back and dig up some Mitt 'pro-choice' speeches from when he was trying to win the governor's race in liberal Massachusetts, and then, let's run those non-stop for two or three weeks and have everyone in the media constantly bringing it up every time he is interviewed? Of course, we both know this isn't going to happen, because the establishment want's Mitt to win, and I think the Liberals secretly do as well. Now, if Mitt wins the nomination, what you can expect for him, is the constant bombardment of accusations and insinuations regarding his wealth.

Again, he was outspent in Ohio 10 to 1! He only lost by one point. This isn't Alabama or South Carolina, this was OHIO! Santorum is holding his own in the midwest, and dominating in the south. If you look at the Ohio precinct maps, Romney only carried in the larger municipalities, the vast majority of rural Ohio went for Santorum.

Yes, some liberals are anticipating Santorum because they believe he can be defeated by turning the election into social conservative issues, but that will not be what the election is decided on. The GOP elite are certainly not giving Santorum a chance, to a letter, they all say he is done.

Again, if Santorum and Newt had not split the rest of the vote, Romney wouldn't have won ANY state last night. He didn't get anywhere near plurality, and that should worry the Romney team. We've got a strange situation, the candidate who is getting most of the vote, is not the candidate the majority of the party wants.

Perhaps, but the process is not over yet. That's all I was saying. In order for Santorum to defeat Romney, he needs for Newt to drop out, and soon, or it will be too late. It is clear after yesterday, this is a two-man race between Santorum and Romney, and all Newt and Paul are doing at this point, is helping Romney.

Again, if Newt Gingrich had not been on the ballot in Ohio, you have to figure that most of his 15% would have gone for Santorum over Romney. Santorum would have won Ohio in a cake walk, and this would have likely been the case in the other states as well, and Romney may not have won a single state.... BUT... because the Tea Party vote or 'anti-Mitt' voters... whatever you want to call them... because they split their vote between Santorum, Newt, and in some cases, Paul... Romney was able to win, barely. Not impressive at all.
