-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo plans to sign an executive order allowing businesses to refuse service to people who won't wear masks.

-There's clear evidence that face coverings can help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

-However, their requirement has become a point of political and cultural divide reaching as high as the White House.

New York governor Andrew Cuomo will sign an executive order allowing businesses to refuse service to people not wearing a mask, he said Thursday, as face coverings become a political sparring point amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"No mask - No entry," he said on Twitter during his daily press briefing in New York City.

We're giving store owners the right to say 'if you're not wearing a mask, you can't come in," Cuomo said. "That store owner has a right to protect themselves; that store owner has a right to protect other patrons in that store. You don't want to wear a mask? Fine, but you don't have the right to go into that store if the store owner doesn't want you to.

The move follows similar orders by local officials in various cities and states and could protect businesses — many of which have already been requiring masks for some time — from discrimination lawsuits. In Minneapolis, for example, not wearing a mask could land someone a $1000 fine. New York previously began to require masks in public spaces when social distancing is not possible and on public transportation."

'No mask — no entry': New York Gov. Cuomo says he'll sign an executive order allowing businesses to refuse service to people who won't wear masks

It has been done in hot spots and in places which are taking an aggressive approach to fight the coronavirus. I believe it is time to do this nationwide. It is actually long past time. This should have been done from the beginning.

The countries which are having success at fighting the virus are taking it seriously.

And after all. How can you expect to win a war if you don't even fight it?

Wearing a mask is how you do that.

We need better leadership. We need a leader who will set the proper example.

The coronavirus will still be with us in November. We are going to have to change our leadership so we can get the proper leadership to set the proper example so that we can turn this thing around. Allowing the pandemic to get out of control is irresponsible. We will have a chance to fix that in November.

Voting to change our leadership in November is the best thing we can do for our nation to fight the pandemic.

I think that when people go to the polls in November, masks should be in place if there's still "considerable risk";)

The freedom to go into a public business, or any public building, without a mask, is too much freedom during a pandemic.

We can't leave it up to each individual to decide if they wish to take the pandemic seriously.

This needs to be a national standard.

I'm sure that a certain segment of our lower-IQ citizens will whine and cry about this, but too bad. Wearing a mask at this time is no different than a business posting "No shirt, no shoes, no service" on its door -- a rule in place for public health reasons.

On local social media pages there are dozens of covidiots complaining about the mask requirements still in place here, and declaring how the governor is a Nazi and isn't the boss of THEM. Yet when you go to any of the stores -- even Lowes -- nearly everyone is wearing a mask. Sounds like the blowhards are just that -- blustering like their tangerine toddler, with no substance behind their words.

I WISH everybody would wear a mask in the stores. I'm seeing more mask usage in the grocery stores and almost none in other stores these days. And it is getting increasingly difficult to maintain 6' distance with so many people totally blowing that off. I am challenged to find polite ways to remind them.

Not sure where you live, but here in New Jersey...we see everyone in ANY store wearing a mask. Even at the gas pumps...people wear masks.

Hello Frank Apisa,

Glad to hear that.

The whole country should be doing that.

The countries that do are having better results.

Makes sense when 2% of your population has the virus. But that is expected when one lives in a third world state. Just pulling you chain. Are masks mandatory? In my area they are recommended. We wear ours when out in public.

Going into stores...mandatory.

Outside...not so much unless crowd, in which case it is recommended.

We are reminded that it is not for ourselves...but the other people with whom we are in contact. It is not a political statement...it is a courtesy we ought to extend to each other.

We got hit very hard, but then we flattened the curve. Now we are doing exceptionally well. At 0.79 we have the second lowest Rt spread factor in the nation.

If only the rest of the nation would comply!

"COVID infection rates up in 20 States..."

Florida was doing pretty good till they opened up the state to tourist. Now we are spiking again but mainly in the tourist destinations.

You are right wearing a mask and keeping ones distance is common courtesy. My bride had a Dr. appointment yesterday. We walked in and everyone was wearing a mask and sitting separated from others. after check in we took a seat far away from the others. There were two chairs back to back with ours. Well in walks this guy no mask he checks in and instead of taking a seat away from us there were plenty he sits down right behind us. I started to say something but decided to move instead. Just confirmed that there are ass holes everywhere. Especially in a doctors office where one expects to see sick people.

Receptionist should have asked that guy to leave. It was a dangerous thing for everyone involved...and it was blatant rudeness.

Or, if or when mask wearing is forced on me, I'm going to use one made from single ply toilet tissue and duct tape. After all, half the people I see wearing on now aren't doing it right so the mask is basically useless. I don't mind social distancing because staying away for idiots is usually a good thing. But, the mask thing is only useful if you have the disease. It really doesn't help to have a half-assed mask that will pass a virus sized particle on to protect yourself from that disease.

as long as this freedom goes both directions

I can refuse to allow you in the store unless you take off the mask

Do be careful doing that. The person might be a bit touchy about taking it off...

Any face covering is better than none.

None of us knows if we may actually have COVID-19 or not. It is entirely possible to be completely asymptomatic.

I would hate to find out that a) I had the disease, and b) I may have been unknowingly spreading it to others, some of whom may actually die because of my irresponsibility.

I would not want to have to live with that thought.

Not true any more than it for other airborne particles. The mask is a filtration device to stop the particles (whatever they are) from entering your body. If the mask doesn't filter ones as small as a virus-- usually requiring a HEPA filter or the N 95-- you get a near meaningless slight reduction in exposure. On the other hand, one worn by someone with the virus has more effect as it reduces the concentration spread far more effectively than you stopping inhalation of it from them with a mask.

But since where I live right less than 1 person in 1000 has this virus, my odds of even being exposed are low and they are made lower by staying out of contact with people by distancing, and only going where I need to go. Mask or no, my odds are worse of getting it than winning some prize with a lottery ticket.

Dr Fauci said the main reason for wearing a mask is to protect others.
