Can carry it further - what if they only hire same sex couples because they tend to have fewer babies than heterosexual couples and thus will save them medical expenses?

Freedom of association. If I don't want to associate with smokers in my private life, I can extend that to my privately owned business.

Conversly, if a company wants to hire ONLY smokers, I'd say the exact same thing.
