Democrats remain stalled on Iraq debate

By: Jim VandeHei and John F. Harris

As the congressional session lurches toward a close, Democrats are confronting some demoralizing arithmetic on Iraq.

The numbers tell a story of political and substantive paralysis more starkly than most members are willing to acknowledge publicly, or perhaps even to themselves.

Since taking the majority, they have forced 40 votes on bills limiting President Bush’s war policy.

Only one of those has passed both chambers, even though both are run by Democrats. That one was vetoed by Bush.

More at link...

well... they don't have a large enough majority to thwart that genius GW. We will be asked to obviously ignore the fact that only ONE of the 40 bills even GOT to GW.

I never quite figured out how posters who recently allege to have become 'anti-war", appear to be having a good laugh and high-fiving each other, when legislation to wind down the war fails.

:)

And no SS reform bill ever made it out of congress while under Republican control either....
One of these made it out of Both houses. And all of these actually had votes...

If they are not careful it may seem like they are trying to keep it alive as an issue in order to gain votes. They may hear accusations that say they are playing politics with the soldier's lives...

Oooohhh, better be careful. Who even has the credibility to make those claims? The Republicans? Right.

Again, do the math in the Senate and tell me what you come up with.

A majority for Dems... same as in the House. Which means they should have been able to send 40 bills to Bush rather than ONE.
LOL. And most of them never make it past the first house they are voted on.... They get voted down themselves.

And voters themselves will have this credibility. Supposedly they sent them there to end the war.

Actually, there are 49 Democrats and two independents that caucus with the Democrats, Bernie Sanders and Joe Lieberman. That gets you control of the Senate but we all know where Lieberman stands on the Iraq war, so we're down to 50. Then you have Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) who had a stroke in December of 2006 and has not participated in Senate activities since. So, the Democrats have a functional minority on the Iraq War. They can't magically turn 49 votes into 51 as you seem to think.

False. They never make is past the Senate. They frequently pass the House. Does your Politico piece break down votes for each house or does it simply lump the two together? Conveniently, it lumps the two together.

If you’re going to make posts listing actual Democratic votes, and start talking about facts, I’m not going to post here anymore! You are taking all of the fun out of this war. How can I “LOL” at this war, if you are going to do this?
I just hope Damo suspends you for this.

I honestly forgot about Johnson, but what about Senators such as Hagel that are now against the war? I would have to look each one up to be sure, but I don't think the 39 have all been straight party line defeats.

LOL!

How many more kids will get blown up but survive it for a few moments so they can die in the streets!

ROTFLMAO!

Those democrats!

Damo, I don't think this is a funny, LOL'ing type moment. It's tragic that weak assed Dems can only line up 90% of their members to support a drawdown in iraq. Have you been aggresively and consistently railing of republicans in congress to join democrats in drawdown legislation, since you allegedly recently turned against the war? Just wondering. :)

Sure try and blame it on the Republicans!

LOL!

SF did you get a load of this? LOL!

Talk to your own majority on that one. I was laughing at the claim that it isn't a Democrat Failure because that minority is just too much for us!
