GM restores 3,000 jobs, prepares to raise output

DETROIT (Reuters) – General Motors Co (GM.UL) said on Tuesday it planned to restore about 3,000 jobs at U.S. assembly plants and related facilities and is getting set to raise North American production by up to 45 percent next year.

GM said it would add shifts at three assembly plants as the automaker consolidates production from plants that are closing or retooling, a process that would not add immediately to its production schedule for 2009.

As much as it may hurt to admit it for some, it's impossible to deny there has been real progress on the economy since January 20. It took eight years to destroy it. It looks like it bottomed out already and we're back on the uptick.

As much crap as people gave him for deficit spending (I've gone through they very simple math of it before - it was absolutely necessary), it worked. So did the cash for clunkers, which helped spur domestic auto sales for the first time in YEARS.

LOL... man tell that to the people out of work. I'm a capitalist first, partisan second. I care more about money than I do a political party. And I would rather have a good economy and a job than have this shit economy and be unemployed. Now not all industries are the same and no disrespect but you are speaking out of your ass if you are going to pick a date like Jan 20th and claim things are getting better. I can speak from a real estate perspective, commercial and residential, and tell you things are not getting better and companies are not hiring.

What? You're trying to say that everything about the economy after Jan 20 belonged to Obama, including the already disappearing jobs? He slowed down job disappearance, but he didn't totally reverse it yet. Its not reasonable to expect him to fix the Republican's mess in 8 months and give flowers and a puppy to every citizen while fixing healthcare.

Yeah, it's so partisan to point out that all economic indicators are better than they were when Obama entered office.

Facts have a liberal bias. That's the truth of it. If it's partisan to point out that Obama's done a lot of good for the economy after Bush fucked it up, then you're a lost cause.

The economy is better. It's not great. It's not where it needs to be. But it's better than it was. That's impossible to argue.

"Facts have a liberal bias" yet the unemployment rate (which includes me who was laid off while Obama was President) continues to rise because the economy is doing so well. I'm just as partisan as the next person so I can appreciate your passion. But seeing as I'm experiencing in the real world what the economy is like I'm not all that up to give chat board points for partisan fun.

Idiot, the rate that the economy is hemorrhaging jobs has slowed. That's an improvement. To suggest otherwise IS actually partisan. And nobody said the economy is doing well. That's another partisan word twisting game you're playing.

I'm out of the job myself. I'm presently trying to start my own business after the nearly complete collapse of my industry. I just know who to blame it on. It isn't Obama.
 
Obama is not going to be blamed for something he didn't create but he will be judged on what he did once he got into office. For a complete picture that's going to take time hence his four year opportunity to impress voters. Now spending close to $800 billion I would hope would have a positive impact on the economy. It's effect of course can be debated as well as the opportunity cost of that capital. But again a real true picture isn't going to available for a couple of years.

Someone with liberal political leanings used the term retarded in San Francisco and got absolutely shredded in the local press for being so insensitive etc. Hell Tiger Woods got ripped for saying he putted like a spaz. The unemployment rate doesn't include the people who have given up looking for jobs. It's bad out there.

I dunno. Guess it's because I'm not talking to people who know me. It's definitely not something I'd call someone in person. I sometimes say it in passing. It offends my girlfriend if I do it without thinking. Her step sister has down syndrome, as does her aunt.
