He should not have weighed in on an issue he himself admitted he does not know about.

Maybe a more fair answer would have been, I dont know the specifics of this situation, but I am against racial profiling and if thats what happened, I am against it.

agreed... He is an idiot for taking sides on this issue, when he clearly wasnt there and this is clearly a he said/he said situation between the cops and the professor. I do note that if this was racially motivated on the part of the white cop, why did the black cop not do anything to stop it?

I dont know the facts of the situation, but people should not be arrested for being rude, and if thats what happened, thats uncool.

I agree the president should never have weighed in on a specific situation that he did not know the detales of.

He did say he and the Professor are friends.

That was a bad move on Obama's part. My jaw dropped when he made those comments, especially when he said that the Cambridge police acted stupidly.

I disagree, if you are being belligerent towards a cop that is just doing his/her job, you should get arrested for disorderly conduct. In this particular case, because it was at the guys house, I personally would not have arrested him, no matter how much of an ass he was allegedly being.

That said, this was an interesting article...

Depends on what you mean by belligerent.

If you are angery and yelling at a cop, you should not be arrested. If you are getting in his face or yelling so loudly that you are preventing him from doing his job and wont stop... Okay arrest the guy.

I agree. To an extent I understand it given the fact that Obama is right in that black men ARE disproportionately arrested, given longer sentences etc... and thus his personal frustration with that fact and his apparent friendship with this professor probably caused him to jump to the conclusion and defense of his friend. That said, to proclaim the police acted 'stupidly' when he had no clue what actually transpired was Obama acting quite 'stupidly'

True, but I think he would have been damned if he did and damned if he didn't.
It's just another pretend issue the right will use to beat him up over.

I feel like we have some high school kid in as President..we will again become a laughing stock, just like when Clinton got caught having his knob slobbered on...good grief..

The cop was there because one of his neighbors called and reported someone trying to break-in.

Yes, the fact that it was an older man with a cane might have been a clue, but the cop is required to make sure there is no crime being committed.

If the cop received a call reporting a potential burglary, he would have to investigate. And if he were told that the man "breaking in" was in fact the homeowner, the cop would be required to verify that info.

Being rude is not illegal. But being belligerent and refusing to present ID (at least in most states) would result in an arrest.

Obama should not have made the comment he did.

I agree Obama should not have made the comment. Refusing to present an ID in your own home is not a crime.

How is it a 'pretend' issue? Obama was not there. All he is working off is the same thing we all are... two conflicting stories from the two parties. For him to insert himself on one side or the other was quite simply... STUPID.

I think Jarod gave a good example of how he should have responded. Because Obama's knee jerk response to blame the police was not wise.

The cop was a racist mutha that needs a little time off without pay.
Obama did exactly what he should have. I'd have blasted that cracker worse.

If there was a witness reporting a burglary, the cop would have needed to see ID before leaving.

If your home was being broken into while you were on vacation, and a neighbor called the cops, would you want the burglar to be able to say "I live here" and the cops just walk away?

I know in Alabama if a law enforcement office asks you for ID you are required to present it.

In this case you are flat out wrong. When a crime has been reported, the police are obligated to investigate. What if that HAD been a burglar who stated... 'sorry man, I live here and I am not showing you an ID'? According to you the cops should have left?

No Jarod, they are required to verify the identity, which means the owner is required to provide it in this case. He should be HAPPY the police responded to the call and were professional enough to check to make sure he was the owner.

So tell us toppy... was the BLACK cop that was there a racist too? Or maybe you will label him an 'uncle tom'????

But he has to observe suspicious behaviour beforehand, doesn't he?

being rude is not a crime. disorderly conduct is used way too often to justify an arrest because someone is easily offended by an otherwise legal action. DC laws should be wiped off the face of the earth. you do not have the right to not be offended. fuck you.
