McCain is blowing it. The more negative he gets, the more nasty he seems, and people don't like the nasty McCain. He's running one of the worst campaigns in recent memory, and that's really saying something.
He looks absolutely ridiculous trying to make the campaign about Ayers during an economic meltdown....

i really can't believe that came up again, its a non issue anyways... he was 8 years old for christs sake.
its quite pitiful and i think it will backfire americans don't care about that, they care about staying in their homes and keeping their jobs.
trickle down economics was tried again when bush #1 was president, it didn't work then and we led into a recession.... we needed a democrat then to get us out and back into a surplus, back into world respect in the international community, and we need a democrat now. it seems that when things go well people pick republicans, then when they screw it all up we have to turn to democrats to get us back on track.

negative campaigning works. It's been proven time and time again. The reason he's not gaining ground is because this economy issue is pissing more and more people off. It's too little too late for John McCain
But maybe you are right, maybe mccain should give up something that's proven to be effective time and time again, and should instead completely switch gears midstream and start talking and focusing on an issue that Obama has a clear advantage on, one in which most american prefer Obama. Mccain should definitely continue to legitimize that issue as the key issue during the election. It would definately help him.

Negative campaigning doesn't always work. In Minnesota it's looking like it's just going to elect the independent candidate. He has gained humongous ground since the two main parties started going all negative.
The ayers issue is clearly back firing on them. Nobody cares about it,

you are confusing the fact that nobody cares about mccain vs. nobody cares about the ayers issue. As I said, mccain is already screwed, and more than likely, NOTHING will help him. But bringing focus to an issue that Obama has a clear advantage on and changing the minds of americans in less than a month is NOT the road to success.
The point is however, despite the fact that democrats THINk they know the path to republican success for getting elected, it's clear they don't.
Mccain is beyond help at this point but it's not because of the ayers issue.
It's the economy stupid.
Some people do care about McCain. And there are some indies who for whatever reason are willing to give him a chance. They don't respond well to the Ayers issue period. Its not helping him.
As for the Economy, McCain already tried to bring it to focus. He "unveiled" his mortgage welfare plan that his base HATES.
But I do agree that he is screwed and Obama has a clear advantage.
