November 8, 2016 - "The number of job openings in the United States rose slightly in September and remained near record levels, offering more proof companies are still willing to hire despite a somewhat slower economy.
Companies were seeking to hire 5.49 million people in September, up from 5.45 million in August, according to a government survey of employers.
About 3.1 million people, meanwhile, quit their jobs in September. The percentage of people in the workforce who walked away from their old jobs, known as the quit rate, was unchanged at 2.1%.
The rate of people quitting returned to normal levels earlier in 2016 for the first time in eight years, another sign of a healthy labor market. Workers are more likely to quit when they get a better offer or think they can find a better job.
The U.S. has created an average of 181,000 new jobs a month so far in 2016 and the economy is on track to generate more than 2 million for the entire year. That will mark the sixth straight year in which employment has grown by at least 2 million.
A rapid pace of hiring since 2011 has reduced the unemployment below 5% and a tighter labor market is now forcing many companies to raise wages to retain or attract talented workers."
