Obamaville Sign Posted near Camped Out Homeless

11658051_BG1.jpg

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Someone has put a lot of thought into a welcome sign that may surprise you, it's in front of a homeless camp off I-25 in Colorado Springs.

Its message, "Welcome to Obamaville, Colorado's fastest growing community." Despite repeated calls no one could answer the question, who put up the sign?

To some homeless the sign's message says enough. Mark Limonez, a homeless man living in "tent city", says the sign doesn't make him feel good about trying to get back on his feet. "Guys are trying to work but there's not enough work out there, so they go pan handling or flag a sign" Limonez says, "I've never seen so many camps since I've been out in the streets - there's no money."

There are no logos on the front of the sign and no clues to where it comes from.

Leave it to the good Christians of Colorado Springs, the epicenter of RightWing Christian "morality" in the Rocky Mountain region, to show the entire world just how much sympathy they feel for the less fortunate.

Leave it to Zappa to assume something like the religion of the sign-maker based on proximity to whatever group he doesn't like rather than actual information.

You're right.

Maybe it was the Liberal Obama supporters in the area.

Or maybe it was that enormous Zoroastrian community in the C Spgs area that did it.

You make assume things about Obama, his supporters and Liberals in general all the time...I didn't realize those rights were reserved only for you and your conservative friends.

Or maybe it was made by an atheist Libertarian.

More than likely, in Colorado at least, it is an unaffiliated voter. They are our largest voting bloc in CO.

An interesting study:
<snip> Now we are starting to get to an answer to the question. (See Table 1.) You find that, of religious people, more than nine in 10 give money every year versus 66 percent of people who are secular; 67 per*cent of religious people give their time by volunteer*ing each year versus 44 percent of the secular community; and religious people give about four times as much money away.

It is interesting to note that the 33 percent who are religious and the 25 percent who are secular have exactly the same average actual income: about $49,000 per household in the year 2000. There is no meaningful difference, so this is not the explanation.

Here's another interesting fact: It doesn't matter which religion you practice. It turns out that 92 per*cent of practicing Protestants give, as well as 91 per*cent of practicing Catholics and Jews and 89 percent of people from other religions. The statisti*cal differences are indistinguishable between them. It has to do with practice, not the religion itself. <snip>

Meme, Damo & ID - take a stand here: do you think it deserves to be called "Obamaville"?

Explain your answer.

Yes, his policies are leading to more homelessness, dependence on government, and lower standard of living for all but the very wealthy.

?????

Less than a year into his administration, the economy is turning around. Most economists are surprised by the progress we've seen in the last few months.

Given that, your answer is confusing.

Hoovervilles were made in the 30s to label camps where homeless people could live after Hoover left office after he destroyed the economy. This is a clever play on history, but it's got a big problem in that Hoovervilles put the blame on the correct guy (the guy who was in office when the crash happened) rather than being retarded and trying to blame the guy who inherited the problem.

Not particularly. I think it is most likely it got that name because it 'grew' under his watch, and it was placed by somebody who didn't like Obama.

My point wasn't the accuracy of random signs. It was that the people who live there can take down the sign if they want, and that you cannot assume the religion of the person, or even the political affiliation, based on its proximity to CO Springs. Both of these things were suggested by either implication or directly by other posters. Now can you answer for them?

I would have been embarassed in 2001 trying to make an argument that any of Bush's policies could be responsible for the economy of that year.

The conservatives who think "Obamaville" is appropriate either have no sense of shame, or no economic knowledge whatosever. They're the same ones who were calling this the "Obama Recession" in the beginning of the year (and some, led by Rush, were even calling it that prior to inauguration).

It's a whole new level of stupidity. I guess congrats are in order...

The Obama thugs will probably shut down the camp now.

Love those rabid righty haters. The sign was created on behalf of an anonymous coward and it cost $150 to create, $150 that could have been used for food and supplies. And you want libs to trust people this stupid?

The sign's now been replaced.

"Swann designed the "Welcome to Obamaville: Colorado's Fastest Growing Community" sign on behalf of someone else, whose identity he wouldn't reveal. Swann also designed a new sign Thursday that replaced "Obamaville". The new sign reads: "Please help, we need firewood, propane and canned food."

"I thought it was just something to draw attention and help those folks," said Swann.

On krdo.com, Mary wrote, "The person that had the sign made could have donated to the homeless shelter instead."

Harley agreed, writing, "…you should have taken this money for the sign and given it to them."

Swann says the "Obamaville" sign cost around $150. He didn't charge the unknown creator for either sign. Swann also tells NEWSCHANNEL 13, the person who put up the sign makes donations of his own to the homeless."

Yeah looks like the homeless people made that sign huh?

Maybe they're just poor and not broke, and they pooled their resources and all contributed to it.

Do you have proof otherwise, seeing as how you're the one voicing something different.
