As far as I can remember, LR has never complained about pay. I know cost of living is low there, but some of the salary ranges they were talking about were so low - and, of course, school supplies, books and any kind of special programs really suffer, as well.

Budget is a direct reflection of our priorities as a nation. I just think it's embarrassing how low proper education is on the list. That kind of investment pays for itself many times over.

No one in the profession has a legitimate argument if they complain about the pay. They knew the pay BEFORE going into the profession.

Hate to break it to you but the reason many don't go into or stay in the profession has nothing to do with money.

I do not think this country is set up particularly well to serve the interests of children. Which says a lot about us, since as you say they are the most powerless demographic of society. I am pretty sure poverty among children is higher than for any other group. And forget about subsidized day care, and mandatory paid maternity leave in this country. Ain't gonna happen in the near future.

I don't know what hours teachers show up at school, but then again any point you think you are making is a straw man as I have shown they make $43K a year and get 17 weeks vacation with a supporting authority. You have, well, bitterness, contempt, and not much else.
 
Why should anyone who has the lowest SAT scores and has the easiest major, gets four months off a year expect to be highly paid?

Also people are forgetting the the more than generous retirement benefits teachers enjoy.

Maybe Owlwoman should have better prepared her daughter if she is disappointed in her life’s decisions

So you don't know anything about what kind of hours that teachers actually put in. Once again...the question is:
do you think they only "teach from 7-3"?
Time spent away from school and the actual classroom setting, this 17 week vacation you keep mentioning, doesn't mean they aren't working. Does it? Let me fill you in...
A teacher's job is year round...and involves much more than showing up at school and presenting a lesson plan...

In the district where I live, a teacher that has met the minimum year to qualify for retirement under the state's retirement system is making almost $69,000/year according to the district's teacher pay matrix. Putting that number into the state retirement system calculator indicates that person will make $37,128/year until he/she retires. It can be set up to where the retiree can make less and when he/she dies, the spouse gets a certain amount until he/she dies.

It depends on the teacher. Some put in far more than others.

That's very true. But most do. All great teachers do;)
We're always amused at those who make the "you have three months of" comment...and the 7-3 claim...;)

119 days of vacation is 119 days of vacation, and forgive me for laughing at your pretense that you know everything about every detail of every teacher's life and that can be all summarized by your unsupported generalizations and stereotypes.
