That's not true. The Antibellum culture of the pre-Civil War South wasn't a class system but a caste system. The white working classes in the south, due to the lack of industrial development due to slavery, were almost as poor as the slaves but were defending of the pecular institution because there was a basement below which a white man could not fall. He could never be lower than a black slave.

With the eradication of slavery and the economic destruction of the South during the war many working class whites in the South were trapped in devestating poverty for quite a few generations so they found themselves in a situation that without this caste systems they are of the same status as the newly freed black slaves and you better believed that they resented the hell out of that.
