For example, you are a foreign national and commit a misdemeanor crime. That potentially could get you deported. A US citizen receives at most some penalty like a few days in jail or a fine. Or, if you are involved in what the government deems activities against the US, you get deported where a US citizen gets a pass as a "free speech" issue.

When the US government starts arresting the US citizen protesters and holding them without charges, etc., get back to me. THAT would be dangerous precedent.

A prominent Palestinian activist who helped lead protests at Columbia University is facing deportation following his arrest by federal immigration agents over the weekend.

Mahmoud Khalil, who graduated from the university in December, was arrested Saturday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the arrest, saying it was a result of President Donald Trump’s executive orders prohibiting antisemitism. Khalil has not been formally charged with a crime.

His lawyer, Amy Greer, said the agents who took him into custody at his university-owned home near Columbia initially claimed to be acting on a State Department order to revoke his student visa. But when Greer informed them that Khalil was a permanent resident with a green card, they said they would revoke that documentation instead.

I heard he is from Syria.

Since I don't know this guy and I am fairly ignorant about immigration law, I don't know what to make of it.

In theory, I don't think people who aren't citizens should be organizing protests in America, particularly if they are pro-Hamas in inclination.

My friend is a Canadian green card holder, and she pretty much keeps her nose out of American politics.

I'm comparing it to threats to the US in general. Hamas is a terrorist organization. The Iranians are a threat to the US. Protests supporting Palestine and calling for the destruction of Israel de facto support Hamas and indirectly Iranian national policy. That represents a potential threat to the US. Therefore, deporting foreign nationals who participate in protests against Israel that call for its destruction while supporting Palestine and, by default, Hamas is reasonable.

What's not reasonable about deporting a foreign national who is leading protests against a US ally (however casual that relationship is), calling for their destruction, while supporting enemies of the United States?

Again, there is no proof that he was calling for Israel's destruction and supporting enemies.

If you were a prosecutor, you'd fail in that aspect.
