It's quite funny that after all these years people still do not understand the basics of what the Belt and Road Initiative is.It is not an alliance or an institution that you join or exit. In fact no country is a "member" of the BRI so if you hear that a country is "leaving" the BRI you're being gaslighted.What the BRI is, similar to what the U.S.'s Marshall plan was, is a series of projects, investments, and infrastructure developments. When a country signs a 'BRI agreement' with China, it's essentially expressing interest in pursuing such projects - that's it.It's also particularly funny in Panama's case to say that it is "leaving" the BRI since most of Panama's major proposed BRI projects were already cancelled or suspended back in 2019 when President Cortizo took office. Examples include the $4.1 billion Panama-Chiriquí Railway was scrapped and the $900 million Panama Colon Container Port project which had its concession revoked. The only major ongoing project is a $1.3 billion bridge over the canal being built by Chinese companies (and which Panama won't cancel since it's already well underway).As things stand, there are no new BRI projects planned in Panama. So this announcement that it is forgoing the BRI is probably a mutually-agreed talking point between Washington and Panama to make it look like U.S. pressure achieved something when in effect it basically changes nothing.

Rubio delivered a message........hold on a minute, I'll just go back grab what I said before and see if I was on the right track. It seems to me Panama had a VERY different tone immediately after Rubio had a chat. Panama will no longer renew their deal with China and it will be ours now. hmmm Common sense tells me that we'll be getting much better rates going forward and Panama will open up it's books anytime we ask them too. There's more to come, I'm sure. I stand by my previous statement.

I saw a few Man on The Street interviews with the average Panama citizen. They didn't look to wealthy. One was asked if they would fight to keep the US out of the canal business and he replied without hesitation. "No way, the canal only makes the politicians and officials rich, we never see anything for it, no help, no improvements" or something close to that.

We spent about a week in Panama City. I was going to report to a job in Bolivia but declined. After the Bolivia job. I was going to have to spend a couple of years in Panama City. No thanks.

We were not impressed with the hygiene. Beautiful country outside the city. Very hot and humid...tropics.

trump is all bluster, and Volsrock swallows it whole. It is no secret that China has been throwing infrastructure money at impoverished nations for years. It's a genius method of acquiring trade partners that are easily moved away from trump. In trump's first term, China agreed to pour tons of money into Panama. Something the U.S doesn't do.

As these nations are learning, dealing with China is like dealing with a loan shark. Panama will either not renew, or terminate early the '17 agreement it had with China.

The kicker:

Panama told trump that the canal's ownership is not up for debate, but they will welcome U.S investment in infrastructure.

That sounds nothing like the OP...does it?

Maybe you've talked me out of a trip, there are too many other great places. Maybe a cruise that goes through the canal, that is, if I decide to go on another cruise.

Yes, a cruise would be great.

You might consider Spain as one of the many other places.

There is a large volume of tourists there now and they are limiting long term stays.

We just returned from Seville a few weeks ago and we stayed at my old apartment. The owner is the son of the owner when I lived there. There were no buildings across the street where I lived (Sebastian Elcano) then but now it is full of apartment buildings.

You can see a walking live cam of the city, if you decide to visit Europe.

I liked Italy and Southern France too.

ROFLMAO. AP and Reuters may be the source for some network stories but they are not the source for all network news. Major networks have their own reporters and camera operators and often do their own reporting. (Reuters must be cited when they are the source.) It appears you are not aware of networks having reporters at the WH and Pentagon. (Trump administration just kicked NBC out of their offices in the Pentagon and gave them to OAN.) NYTimes and WAPO are the source for a lot of local papers national news stories. You seem to think everyone is as stupid as you are since you only found out about AP and Reuters a decade ago. I knew about them over 40 years ago.

Mulino told reporters after the meeting that Rubio made “no real threat of retaking the canal or the use of force.”
