That sounds like a case of making things up.

Americans have always understood the need for border security. We HAVE border security already! We don't want a wall of shame. We just don't think there is an emergency and we don't believe the situation warrants deficit spending. What happened to all the Republican deficit hawks?

Republcan deficit hawks are why Trump hasn't been able to fund the border fence in the last two years. And No, it is well documented that democrats used to be for border security until Trump made it the center piece of his platform.

Newsflash: Our government does lots of 'nonessential' things which contribute to making America great. Without these functions, our country is less great. The shut down is making America less great. Is there some part of Promote the General Welfare' that is somehow unclear to you?

Most Americans realize that even if they do not personally and immediately benefit from the many things government does for us, that it all adds up and makes America great. Only a misinformed view would believe the shut down is a good thing, or that it will reduce the federal debt.

I fail to understand how people who want lower taxes expect the government to deficit-spend and survive without sufficient revenue.

A physical barrier is a physical barrier. Stop trying to parse the difference between "long" and "lengthy" and "big" and "huge". It is the same thing and the democrats supported it until Trump came along

No, it’s not the same, cost for one thing is a big, huge, difference. I didn’t support the Democrats idea, either just for the record. I say the Feds ought to work with the states who border Mexico to make the determination what security is needed.

He was able to see that it doesn't actually matter who gets the credit or the blame for it. In a standoff like this, partisan fingers will always be pointed at the other side, so it is pretty stupid to put a lot of energy into delegating blame. Trump was smart to claim the arbitrary blame on this, because the shutdown is a good thing. I have never liked Chuck and Nancy, but I credit them for this government shut down.
