People generally feel more comfortable with people that have similar genetics. Simple as that.

We can speculate on why this is. Maybe it's because people with similar genetics think similarly and have similar experiences. Even white people who don't consider themselves Nationalists or care about race still, on some level, know that they're in the same boat as other white people, because they're all having the white experience, whether they like it or not. I think something like that is a cause for self-segregation, though I think cognitive abilities and evolutionary factors also play a role.
Another factor is that with multiracialism, there is a constant fight over representation. Racially homogeneous societies are just a lot more simple, nobody is calling you racist because your store doesn't employ enough black people. Right now, we're seeing the Left lose to an actual retard because the Democrats are being forced to suck up to black and brown people at the expense of white people.

So yeah, there are a few reasons why people choose to self-segregate based on race.
