Racial ‘Cleansing’ in L.A.
Federal prosecutors say a powerful Latino gang systematically targeted rival black gang members and innocent black civilians in a reign of terror.

A south Los Angeles Latino street gang targeted African-American gang rivals and other blacks in a campaign of neighborhood "cleansing," federal prosecutors say. Alleged leaders and foot soldiers in the Hispanic gang Florencia 13, also called F13, are being arraigned this week on charges stemming from a pair of federal indictments that allege that the gang kept a tight grip on its turf by shooting members of a rival gang—and sometimes random black civilians. The "most disturbing aspect" of the federal charges was that "innocent citizens … ended up being shot simply because of the color of their skin," U.S. Attorney Thomas O'Brien told reporters in announcing the indictments.

No one is sure what started the war between F13 and the black gang known as the East Coast Crips in the Florence-Firestone area of unincorporated L.A. County. Simple neighborhood demographic shifts played a role, as formerly black areas have become majority-Latino. The two gangs are also rivals in the lucrative drug trade. Much of the F13 indictments lay out a conspiracy alleging that gang members controlled drug houses where they sold large amounts of cocaine, crack and methamphetamine. Some say the killings began after the Crips pulled a large drug heist against F13 several years ago. Whatever the causes, L.A. Sheriff's Department statistics chart the war's violent toll: 80 gang-related shootings in the past three years, including 20 murders.

The federal charges name 61 alleged F13 members in two indictments. The gang-violence charges came in a 53-count RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) indictment against 24 alleged gang leaders, charging them in a conspiracy to sell drugs, possess weapons illegally, and assault and kill black gang members and civilians. In the second indictment prosecutors charged the rest of the men on federal drug-distribution charges. More than 40 of the defendants pleaded not guilty at arraignments Tuesday, according to prosecutors. Michael Khouri, an attorney for Luis Aguilar, 35, says his client left the gang "several years ago" and served recently as a gang negotiator. "Mr. Aguilar will plead not guilty, and he is not guilty," says Khouri. Fifteen of the accused remain fugitives.

This is about gang war and drug profiteering, not race.

Blacks have not responded by killing innocent hispanics and I'd imagine that this gang would murder any other gang members, including hispanics, who tred on their "turf."

I read something similar about it which posed it as a reason why blacks should join in the rant against hispanics and immigration .. which is bullshit.

Not just about drug profiteering BAC. All Races can/do have racial prejudice....

Now if you wanted to say it was about power and control, I think that would be more accurate.

All races do have some racial prejudice, but not all people. As I said, they would kill other hispanics, and I'm sure they have, who crossed their paths.

Right , not all people. But those in gangs.....

Often times gangs of different races work together and see the system as a common enemy. The killing of innocent black citizens in this case could and should be prosecuted as a hate crime because they chose their victims by the color of their skin in an attempt to terrorize a community of people .. however, I contend that race may not be their prime motivation, but rather profit.

imho all people in gangs are Morons.
I have always believed that they are weak-willed. They live among people and believe that it is "respect" that they receive, desperate for that "respect" that is taken and not earned they too join up looking for the same.

Yep, kinda like those that blindly follow a political party ?
a pack mentality thing.

Not much like that one. One doesn't join the republicans because they think it will get them respect they didn't earn. Most people choose a party because they vote for and attempt to implement laws that they agree with more often than another choice of party.

Very few people join gangs because they think gansta life is the way that all people should live, they do it because they are too weak to stand on their own and believe that the only respect they will receive is that 'respect' that is demanded rather than commanded by their actions.

The blind support portion may come from this fear to stand alone as well, but not from the "respect" thing. There is some similarities, but not the same reality. I would never say that somebody joined either the D or R party because they believe they will be able to demand 'respect' they never otherwise would get.

I have to disagree, I think many call themselves Republicans because it is percieved by many to be the party of those with money.
Many want to be associated with the rich and powerful.
Why else was lifestyles of the rich and famous and other forms of hero worship so popular ?
It hits on a basic issue in many of us to run with the big dawgs.

This is preposterous. Many Ds are rich, and watch those shows as well. Since we have no royalty in the US we tend to bring those "rich and famous" to that status.

I should have not said "never" though, as I think that many actors/actresses join the D party because they think it will give them more respect in that community of people. I should have said "rarely". I think almost all people join gangs because of either fear, or because of this 'respect' they think they deserve regardless of their actions. I do not think that in the large majority of cases for those in a political party.

Call it preposterous if you want, But I stated my beliefs on the matter.
And am not convinced otherwise.
You have yet to explain why so many democrats would watch the shows as well as republicans and make them some of the most popular on TV. It is silly to attempt to blame the republican party for such television shows or the american fascination with those who are rich.

I have yet to meet any republican who has joined because he would be perceived as "rich" if he were republican. It is preposterous at its base level.

You've given the typical, "I don't know shit about gangs but I watch TV" opinion of gangs.

Many join gangs because they believe that the gansta life is the life to live.

Many join because they see the police and courts as a gang that targets them, not just for their behavior, but because of who and what they are.

Many join because they have no respect for a system that doesn't deserve much respect.

Many join for survival as they are surrounded everyday by conflict and struggle. Many of those who point fingers at gangs and call them "cowards" would pee their pants and cry for mommy like sissies if their car broke down and found themselves in areas where young people have to live everyday.

In a foxhole, stick a gang member next to me.

Many, but most do not.

You speak as one who thinks they know more than they do about gangs and gives a view jaundiced by their own view of the "system". You take one group and pretend all gangs are related to this.

You know nothing about me, but assume much. I lived and worked among them for many years of my life my opinion is not coming from "watching TV" but from the actions I have witnessed among the people I grew up with.

You can take your elitist attitude and assumption of my life and get rid of it. If you wish to know from where my opinion comes then ask rather than assume my life and experience. You, as many on here, will find you are more often wrong the more you attempt to do that.

You have a comprehension problem Damo ? I in no way blamed the republican party for those who watched the shows. Sheesh.
I said there is a pack mentality thing or run with the big dog this in humans that cause the show watching, hero worship and wanting to run with those with money, aka republicans.
sigh...
